#RustWeek

2025-05-26

As much fun and as productive as #rustweek was, it feels good to be home. I'm going to be quietly focusing on a talk for using Bevy for scientific simulation in Rust, and poking at various UI problems. I really want 0.17 to be the version where we finally ship some decent widgets.

Love y'all <3

theotherphil is a new contributor who tackled a ton of little docs PRs while at #rustweek with us :) Here's one of them! Good little fix, and a great example of why keeping a well-groomed issue backlog is worthwhile. Who knows when the urge might strike?

Merging.

Ohoho: one of our first usage examples from #rustweek is ready to merge! This is a really nice demonstration of a core game dev concept: cooldowns. Great selection of example, and a good level of complexity.

Love it: merging.

I'm back and recovered from #rustweek, and it's time for your weekly #bevymergetrain. As part of our unconf there, the community did a ton of #opensource PR review for #bevy <3 Wildly appreciated!

This roundup will be extra long (50 PRs!): github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pul

Rose Peck's talk about floating point hashing at #RustWeek is definitely worth watching. It's linked in this supplementary blog post

There is some #RustLang content but overall it should be accessible to a broad audience of programmers. Very well presented!

Rust Week You Didn’t Wanna Miss

Today’s Issue: $20,000 Performance Bounty, Evolution of Rust Compiler Error, and Is Rust the Future of Programming?

I’ve been reading “Coding Places” on and off during my journey to and back from #RustWeek '25, and I really enjoyed the way I was continuously reminded of the discussions in the book about the contrast between central and peripheral places in the software industry.

In that light, I was saddened knowing that there’s a hidden actual meaning behind our often-repeated joke “every year will be RustYear” 😶

That said, it’s been a real pleasure meeting y’all in person 🙏

Spending my evening building up the #rustweek all-hands gift.

A shark on the right. Blue fins, white bottom and sharp teeth.
A crab on the left. Red, big eyes.

#RustWeek was a fantastic conference all around. I enjoyed meeting so many people, and also seeing old friends. Kudos to the organizers.

I went to Quaker meeting today in Den Haag, and will be staying in Netherlands a few days just for vacation. It's possible I can meet up with people a reasonable train ride away. My plan is to visit a bunch of places by train, including Enkhuizen, where I was born and lived until age 3.

Starting my train journey home now.
I'm already proactively grumpy for Germany forcing passport controls on board.

Reading all these positive toots about #rustweek makes me feel like I missed a fantastic event 😢

Well then, see you next year (in person) 🤘😉

Thank you all so much for coming to #RustWeek. I had a fantastic week. Organizing it was so much fun. Seeing all the ideas come to life and watching hundreds of people having a good time was magical. ✨️ See you next time.

Ducks from #rustweek finally joined their new family ^_^

4 rows of rubber ducks sitting on top of a wooden surface. The back row contains two ducks in light blue color and a logo of ČVUT (Czech technical university). The next row is three ducks wide with logos of tech companies - dark blue Ixon, middle one yellow Rossum and third one red Espressif. In front of them are two yellow ducks from Siko stores (they sell bathroom stuff). One duck in front of all of them is really small without any brand name, but 3D printer geeks might recognize the one given out by Bigtreetech.

The morning after #rustweek
I don't think I talked to so many smart people in so few days ever. Energizing.

But also I need to recharge my social batteries first.

After attending #RustWeek and the All-Hands, I'm left with so much hope for the future. The project is *the people*, and the people I saw, talked to and worked with make me proud to call myself a rustacean.

Returning home after a six days at #RustWeek. The week began with the conference, which was super fun & engaging, but the best part for me were the 3 days of #Rust All-Hands. The event gathered Everyone™️ from RustProject to discuss current burning issues & vision for the future.

RustWeek has been so incredibly fun. I'm so glad I volunteered, and it was incredibly gratifying to hear how enjoyable others found the whole event. I really enjoyed all the talks I managed to sit in on, and I got to meet so many cool people! Can't wait to do it again next year.

#RustWeek

The main message I got from the conference:

Compared to C/C++/Go, Rust code takes more time to initially write. But in the much longer maintenance phase, Rust takes a _lot_ less effort. The maintenance effort reduction factors that were mentioned were 0.6, 0.5 and even 0.25 . That is the reduction in team sizes for maintenance.

That reduction is big, and more than enough for larger companies to afford the time to learn Rust, typically 6-12 weeks per developer.

Watching the Eurovision Song Contest is a surprisingly good way to wind down after a week of discussing #rust at #rustweek. 😄
