My #SREcon talk โ€“ The Computer Wants to Lose Your Data โ€“ is now up!

Lots of in-the-weeds details on how databases achieve durability and how small mistakes can turn into big problems.

Do I know anyone who's had a talk accepted at SRECon in the past who might be willing to share your proposal?

I am pleased to report that I did not catch COVID from #SREcon. One of the best big conference venues I've been in, CO2 levels stayed under 650 in the main keynote rooms and below 800 in even the low ceilinged rooms and expo hall!

the #SREcon post-event dinner I went to last night was at a pub named "Dockers" which was a wee bit on the nose...

#SRECon 3rd and final day.

Lots of interesting talks, particularly Andreas Strikos from GitHub's "CPU Utilization: The Hidden Cost of Running Hot"

The Big picture

* Let's have some fun
* Aimed at inspiring you, my peer practitioners, to apply these concepts in ways I haven't thought of.
* A system/service is a chain of bottlenecks - removing one reveals the next.

John Looney of Crusoe was discussing this at his morning keynote yesterday at #SREcon - describing "clean energy parks" where power consumers and producers gather, similar to the previous generation of network connectivity hubs. Apparently a giant wind farm being built in western IE for this too.

Next #SREcon talk is another one of the many AI-related ones at this conference. Todd Underwood, the speaker of "SRE for GenAI and GenAI for SRE?" is from Anthropic. And I have to concede that he's really good at it.

Slides for my #SREcon talk on Fast, Reproducible Builds with Docker Bake: drive.google.com/file/d/1g-H6... Fun fact, 42% of our codebase (by LOC) was written this year, and we're only 9 months in! And yes, we're doing 2x builds & merges per week with only 50% more devs, thanks, AI & fast builds!

git-of-theseus plot showing 600k out of 1.4M lines of code last touched in 2025, then 300k, 200k, 100k lines of code respectively surviving from 2024, 2023, and 2022. the remaining 1/4 of the codebase was composed prior to 2021.
