In 2015 security researchers publicly confirmed the first real world case of malware hiding inside hard drive firmware. The implants were linked to a long running espionage group and were found embedded in the controller code of hard drives, not the operating system. This meant the malware survived disk wipes and OS reinstalls because the drive itself reloaded the infection during boot.
The revelation changed security assumptions overnight. Firmware was no longer a trusted layer and hardware was officially part of the attack surface.
They called it security. It was the Wild Wild West. No vetting. No training. One officer, a packed door, and a bad night waiting to happen.
