I managed to get to some yard dog trials the other week and was rewarded with some great shots.

The sheep were being absolute menaces, which sucks for the competitors, but makes for some great photos.

I just love the flying dirt and harsh shadows in this picture. It really gives a sense of just how hot and dry it had been. Unfortunately I don't know who this pup is, but I assure you he put up a valiant effort against those belligerent sheep!

On a hot dry summers day an Australian Kelpie is rounding up sheep in a pen. The dog is in the foreground running alongside a group of sheep. The ground is loose, dry dirt and clouds of dust can be seen being kicked up by the feet of the running animals. The bright midday sun is casting harsh shadows, which really accentuates the dogs shiny black fur. The photo is cropped reasonable tight showing the dog and seven sheep in profile running from left to right. Behind the sheep is a steel fence draped in hessian with more sheep penned up on the other side.

I've been quite smitten by Heelers lately. While cattle dogs tend to be few and far between at sheepdog trials, I did manage to snap a few nice shots of some spectators at the 2024 National Sheep Dog Trial Championships (wow, that name is a real mouthful).

This is Martyn. His calm appearance is belied by his pricked ears, which reveal his true state of alertness. While I may be projecting a little, his expression says to me: 'Why is the guy I was playing with just moments ago, now sitting out of reach pointing a giant camera at me?'. While I'm sure he would rather we had kept playing, I feel he is resigned to the fact that sometimes humans are just weird.

A Blue Heeler is lying in the red dirt, staring directly at the camera. He has large pricked ears and is wearing a harness. He is lying next to a timber picnic table, the corner of which can just be seen to the right of shot. The photo has a very shallow depth of field which brings the dogs face into sharp focus but leaves the background extremely soft, further emphasising the intensity of the dogs expression. A number of people on plastic chairs can just be made out in the distance, but due to the soft focus they mostly merge into the background.

Yesterday I was out assisting at a sheepdogtrial. It was a bit difficult at first as I did not had my own dog with me 🌟 . But plenty of dogs to pet and keep company. All in all it was a nice day. Seen some nice runs.

Today back behind the keyboard again.

Ps: these two dogs are Kyra and Jodi. They made sure the sheep stayed in the right spot at the beginning of the run

Another shot from some yard dog trials. Recently I've been enjoying picking out and editing photos where the sheep dominate the image.

While the sheep don't seem to have the same keenness as the dogs, there is still something endearing about them.

While I love taking photos of the competitors at sheepdog trials, it is often the spectators that make the most interesting photos.

This is Jax, a spectator from the 2023 Australian National Sheep Dog Trial Championships. As recent posts have shown, I'm a sucker for a kelpie with pricked ears.

A black and tan kelpie is sitting upright staring straight at the camera. He is sitting on dusty gravel with his owner standing beside him, although the owner is mostly out of shot. He has sharp eyes and his large ears are fully pricked. His mouth is open in a smile and he has one front paw lifted off the ground. The stare is intense, you can see why the sheep are so mesmerised. I reckon if this dog told me to go stand in the pen, I'd probably do it.
