October 2023 in the Pulju Wilderness Area, Finland. On the day of departure I was surprised by the first snow and had to haphazardly pack gear that would let me survive freezing temperatures. I did not bring skis, as I was unsure how much snow there would actually be. Needless to say, my rucksack weighed a ton on that trip. After injuring my knee in a slip and with the conditions turning bad, I had to cut my planned three week hike down to just one. Still, a nice hike 🤣

The tent is so roomy that it feels safe to cook inside, with no need to worry about carbon monoxide or anything catching fire. If needed, I could stay holed up in this tent during a raging storm and still cook safely, unlike in my old Hilleberg Akto.

Selfmade windshield in action made from Nomex. My design turned out to be a bit complex to use, but when set up properly it did its job. A few times it ended up in the flame and did not catch fire, or it extinguished immediately after removing it from the flame. I already know how to improve the design for the next trip where I will need it. For the upcoming ski tour I will just bring my stove box, which is made from an IKEA metal storage box.

Making firewood with a knife is easy, and I would argue safer than using an axe if you are not used to swinging one, as long as you have a knife that can take some pounding. You need a full tang blade that is thick enough to withstand the forces.

Unpacking my camp in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, Finland. The tent is a Durston X-Mid 1 Solid UL, which I really fell in love with. It handles wind well, has no condensation issues, and feels surprisingly roomy. My only real complaint is that it can be a bit tricky to set up.

The actual Reisadalen was very impressive, with huge cliff overhangs and a clear river flowing through the valley. Still, the narrow canyon made me feel a bit trapped, so I did not stay there for long and climbed up a fairly steep wall to get out. The feeling of not being alone was also quite strong, even though I only met four people while I was there.

Reindeer stag and his cow searching for lichen to eat. I saw a few of these big stags on my hike, and they are always quite a sight with their massive antlers. Usually reindeer are calm and you do not need to worry about them, but during the mating season in September and October you really do not want to annoy the males, as they can become aggressive.

I really liked the vast landscapes and September colors of the fjells bordering Reisa National Park. Fjells always make me feel like I can breathe freely and they calm my nerves. The feeling is so different from Helsinki, where I live, that I constantly find myself thinking about moving closer to the fjells.

Goofballs of the fjell on the run. Norwegian reindeer got scared of me and took off. Funnily enough, just on the other side of the border in Finland reindeers followed me. This might be because reindeer in Finland are fed during winter, and because there are far more tourists in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area than in Reisa National Park, apart from the canyon itself. They are simply much more used to people.
