Thoughtful essay today by Esau McCaulley, titled "Does the Meaning of a Song Change Depending on Who Wrote It?," in which he wrestles with issues common to American song history: white appropriation through publishing and Black reclamation through performance and reception. It made me think again about how music's multiple modes of existence can both create and complicate meaning.
