For years, Sodexo-run HMP Bronzefield, where three of the hunger strikers are held, has neglected prisoners to the point of death. Remember the 2019 case of Rianna Cleary, an eighteen-year-old mother forced to give birth alone in her cell and bite through her own umbilical cord after being ignored by medical staff overnight; remember the resulting death of her newborn child, baby Aisha.

Remember the 2016 case of Natasha Chin, who, despite vomiting continuously for nine hours, was left to die in her cell without medical attention or prescribed medications, less than 36 hours after arriving at Bronzefield.

Remember Toni Asik and Tracey Dyke, who died in Bronzefield this July less than two days apart, following, in Toni's case, relentless mistreatment and misgendering by prison staff.

This pattern of neglect extends beyond the walls of HMP Bronzefield and ends at the hands of the British state, who seemingly do not care whether prisoners live or die.

As the government attempts to dismiss the severity of the conditions and cases of our hunger strikers by talking about their "robust and working' processes, we remind them that these same processes led to the hunger strikers being refused vital observations, subjected to physical force, and, most dangerously, denied emergency medical attention on multiple occasions.

We, with the backing of almost a thousand medical experts, legal experts, politicians and advocacy groups, maintain the need for immediate negotiations to begin to put an end to the hunger strike before it is too late. As the government talks about their vast experience of prison hunger strikes, we remind them that it is specifically because of their historical role in allowing the deaths of ten
hunger-striking prisoners in the North of Ireland that we have so little faith in their ability to safely work for an outcome for the hunger strikers. We urge them again to open up an avenue of dialogue that will allow the demands to be met.
