Der Zeustempel in Olympia, um 470 v. Chr. erbaut, beherbergte einst Phidias’ 12 Meter hohe Zeus-Statue aus Gold und Elfenbein (eines der sieben Weltwunder der Antike). Der Giebel des Tempels zeigte den Pelops-Mythos, der die olympische Tradition begründete. Sechzig Säulen aus lokalem Kalkstein rahmten den Naos; nach der Plünderung 426 n. Chr. blieb nur der Sockel erhalten.
