#TenthPlanet

I’ve got #TenthPlanet on in the background.

The chap playing #GeneralCutler … ?

Is doing one hell of a job …

So, The Tenth Planet is a bit naff isn't it? There is a huge amount of standing around and talking. Characters spend 90% of the episode in the control centre and just move out to other rooms for five minutes before returning. And then Mondas just blows up and the Cybermen collapse. It's a bit sad that, in his last story, the 1st Doctor does practically nothing except stand around. Ben is fun though.

It has taken 96 days but I have finished the whole Hartnell era (although he will still be around for a few comics yet). I am sad to see him go but also excited to move on to Troughton. For people who like stats I am 4.92% of the way through the show in terms of time and 2.01% of the way through the episodes on my list.

This whole story has really been about Ben and he has shown (if there was any doubt) that he can do just as well in this role as Ian and Steven

I don't believe that the Cybermen are the villains of this story. There are certainly cultural differences between them and the humans but they only want to save their world. They agree it is logical for Earth to be destroyed but still want to save people

I'm pleased that Hartnell was well enough to make the filming of this final episode but despite this welcome return he does feel ancillary to the plot and is quickly side-lined until the final scenes

There is an entirely different reading of this story in which the Cybermen realising that humanity is going to wiped out (not realising the impact on Mondas) come to try and save as many people as possible. The Humans react by gunning down their rescuers

The General has become a caricature by this point. His list of priorities is a little skewed and his willingness to risk irradiating the whole planet on the off chance that it might work is borderline deranged

I didn't even mention that the last episode was the final footage we have of William Hartnell in his own era, as he is absent for this whole episode. Ben relays a little technobabble but apart from that I'm not sure what the Doctors role would have been

I think its easily overlooked that these Cybermen are not here to conquer or destroy humanity but to save it. Mondas has returned and Earth's power will be drained. The Cybermen could have just let it happen but instead they come to save everyone

I really like the way Ben looks and sounds truly devastated that he is forced to kill the Cyberman. With his background in the navy it would have been easy to have him as a military stereotype but they go for something more interesting and it works

BEN: "Oh, I can just imagine trying to tackle one of them geezers with a screwdriver" Oh Ben if only you knew the future of this series...

The Cybermen info dump was accompanied by some interesting directing choices

KRAIL: "I do not understand you. There are people dying all over your world yet you do not care about them." The Cybermen do make some interesting philosophical points here. Although this is good I don't think I've ever seen these arguments fully explored

The first iconic image of the Cybermen. This is one of my favourite designs and I even love the fact we see a regular hand. This is the big reveal for me but I suppose entirely new for the audience at the time. I would definitely have been intrigued

It is strange to think that this is a story set in the future (for the audience and characters). This is the equivalent of the show going to 2044 in the new series. There is a lot more international cooperation than in the real 1986 at least

From this image through a periscope the crew of the base realise that Polly is a woman and yet with her normal clothes, hair and voice the pirates never guessed.
