As a little girl I was called "quiet and shy". And they were right. I didn't really have a close friend growing up due to frequent moving. I kept to myself.

In Middle School, this song was my best friend. Gossamer was one of my favorite CDs all through High School, it was my comfort play.

Crush didn't requite their feelings? "I get carried away..." They did? "Constant Conversations." They realize I'm a bit extra (what teenage girl isn't?) "Love is greed." Summer break, about to fall into a lake backward? "Mirrored Sea." Met my present day best friend forever and went to my prom single? "Where We Belong."

Minnie Riperton - Rainy Day in Centerville

Her best known song started a generation of women in pursuit of the hard-to-find whistle register (and far fewer men who could ever successfully find it. Conchita Wurst's beautiful voice being a key example!) But Minnie was an accomplished singer of anything she dared to try.

Esthero's Breath From Another I heard once front to back five years ago, and I've been obsessed with the album ever since. 💜 This is probably the "hardest" song on the album, the rest is very chill and mood setting.

Heaven Sent specifically to me feels like it could be the start of a revenge story, or a woman seeking to get away from a bad influence before it's too late. And I've heard the entire song could be an homage to a foreign movie. My bestie thinks the song is a female serial killer's tale from her reading the lyrics, and I kinda see that too.

Anyway, here it is. 😊 The album I tend to play during Halloween time. Or on cold rainy days.

It's probably the most epic cover in my memory. To take a song and change genres to do it isn't all that easy. And then to give it so much vibrance and honor the original.

I was torn on this. Because a recent loss makes Nothing Compares 2U a shoe in here. But I think this track is just as impactful, but to a later decade.

This choice is a tongue-in-cheek pick for me. I... don't really believe in marriage. So if in the extremely unlikely event I do go through with it, I've tasked my BFF to bring a copy of this song and seize control of the DJ booth to play this and wake me up.

I've learned not to say "never". Anyone who dares say that is doomed to face it. But a LOT would have to change before that even becomes a "huh, maybe."
