This , we're looking at Data & Databases!

The scope of a project is basically the answer to the question “what gets into your dataset and what doesn’t”? For database projects, having a concrete idea of your project scope is very important...

For today's , we're looking at Long Term Archiving! The final chapter in the data management series covers the topic of digital long-term archiving. This step also reveals whether active and consistent data management has been implemented in the project. This makes it all the more important to consider archiving during the planning and implementation of a project.

It's #TrainingTuesday !

Normally I devote one post to a topic, but I feel like I should note that when I say the dog's progress can be very gradual, and YOUR difficulty increases should ALWAYS be gradual... this is what I mean.

Here, weeks in, we have Corsair eating on his pallet in a Down. I don't want him to think that uneven footing means he can't settle, or that he has to be balanced/feel precarious all the time on it!

And here he's got a paw or two on the grate, further from the edge--yesterday, he very purposefully reached out with one leg and planted a paw in the middle of a grid portion and I just about popped confetti streamers in celebration. It was a deliberate, conscious choice he made to offer that behaviour, and he did so with no uncertainty about what he was doing or why. That's HUGE. That's a huge deal!!

He can now stand with one front paw firmly in the middle of the grate, and both front paws on the metal (the second paw is always on the edge, which is fine.)

An all-black German Shepherd Dog lies down sphinx-style on a wooden pallet, his front legs out in front of him and spread apart, with a teal puzzle bowl between them. He's in deep concentration as he licks kibbles out of the grooves. The pallet is on a pavement driveway, and a tangle of pruned branches lies off to the side.An all-black German Shepherd dog stands over a metal drainage grate that's in the road. One front paw is on the bars between several holes, and the other front paw is further back, toes spread to balance over the holes. A teal slow feeder puzzle bowl is set on the grate, and the dog is busy licking kibbles out of it. His tongue is all the way out and he's very focused on that!An all-black German Shepherd dog stands over a metal drainage grate that's in the road. He's approached it from a completely different angle. One front paw is squarely on the metal bar between several holes, but the other paw is off the grate, on the pavement. #TrainingTuesday

I often say that if you want a tired dog, work their brain. That doesn't always look like leashed, treat-filled training!

For example:

1 hour of play and exploration anywhere, as long as they're running and sniffing and having a great time!

Home to rest.

Give dog a bath. (Cooperative care time!)

Done!

Corsair doesn't even want to take a walk today. I tried TWICE to take him for a walk and both times he acted like walking with me was actually a death march and made it SO clear he'd rather do anything than that...

He was VERY happy to task train, but a sniffy liberty walk? Suffering. Horrible. I was actively torturing him with each step he was FORCED to take. And believe me--each step was an active effort from me to encourage him to take. And then he'd stop and stare at me. "Dad. No."

It's not because of today's rain. It isn't raining yet and rain has never stopped him. He's just cooked from yesterday!

Behold:

An all-black German Shepherd lying sprawled in the grass against a livestock fence, his tongue lolling out and his eyes squinted with exhausted bliss. There's dandelions around him. Between his front paws is a much-loved, well-chewed orange and blue chuck-it kick ball. A bright red rubber ball rests by his armpit. This is a dog who has played until he dropped! An all-black German Shepherd absolutely sprinting through a big green field with fencing. He has a red jolly ball meant for horses clamped in his jaws. Livestock fencing can be seen behind him, and some agility jumps are set up nearby. He's very small in the picture because the field is huge.Another shot of the all-black German Shepherd running around a big green field with fencing. He still has the red jolly ball meant for horses clamped in his jaws. His position makes it clear he's leaping forward, with a lot of power from his back end. There's some outdoor furniture meant for humans visible, and a lot of trees outside the fence line. He doesn't care about any of that.

The sequel to Home Depot pallet!

It's... a metal grate!

This is what feeding your dog in weird places does: it gradually renders that location/experience neutral or positive! This is why people are encouraged to feed their dogs in their crates.

Corsair had a big regression in his confidence about footing over winter, when he slipped in a grocery produce section and ate shit on the tile. Normally he's resilient to that kind of thing, so the regression was odd.

I worked on his confidence over winter by scattering kibble over sheet ice and letting him navigate that surface and eat them at his pace. Now we're playing this game every morning for his breakfast--I did this when he was a little puppy, too, so he remembers it.

You can do this with anything! Run the vacuum in the background (not close to the dog, you WORK UP TO that), spray hose water around the dog (don't spray your dog if they're scared!), and so on. But if your dog shows stress--REDUCE THE DIFFICULTY.

For #trainingtuesday I present: building endurance for complex asks!

This setup doesn't LOOK very complex, but for Corsair it is!

I'm asking him to hold a Down, which is itself something that requires patience and a lot of practise. I am asking him to place himself under AND between very close boundaries. I am asking him to CRAWL to get in that position. I am asking him to hold that position despite the relative lightness (and therefore precariousness) of the chair itself.

That's a lot of mental and emotional pressure, and then he needs to maintain it while I sit on the chair or stand up from sitting, or walk away and come back. And there's not a lot of "wiggle room" where he is... very literally so. And he knows he's supposed to resist any temptations like cats and dropped kibble!

It's HARD.

An all-black German Shepherd dog lying underneath a basic metal kitchen chair. Only his hips and back are actually under the chair. His shoulders, front legs, and head are out front, and his tail and butt are sticking out the other end.

Today's #trainingtuesday is... related to the Hold, but a step above. Holding your own treat/hiigh value food!

Yesterday I started trying this with Corsair. I started with baby carrots--because they're small enough for multiple reps, but solid enough for me to hold onto one end of it, so he doesn't just immediately schlorp them into his mouth. (This happened a few times anyway, LOL......)

At first, I rewarded him for putting his teeth on the carrot end and not just. Inhaling it or biting through it. Then said Give so he knew to let go.

The reward? Several kibbles popcorned into his mouth by hand, AND the baby carrot, tossed over his shoulder with the tossed treat cue (Get It!)

This was to prevent frustration about not getting the carrot, AND to make sure there was clarity about when to EAT the carrot and when to HOLD the carrot.

Gradually I began to let go of the carrot for a second, then two seconds, and so on.

EVERY rep was rewarded WITH THE CARROT as well as kibble.
