I was doing my taxes for the US IRS today. During the years that I had money I paid someone else to do them for me. Since then I do it myself in the most basic way possible, a half step up from filling out PDF forms online. It's shocking how retrograde it feels to file US taxes! YES, there are software options with more automation, and for my income level there would be no charge. BUT I'd still have to use a for-profit tax filing service. That means giving my info to a company that will contact me with marketing materials all year long. That's what everything is like in the US. So many services between US citizens and our government are farmed out to third party corporations with practical monopolies that overcharge middleman fees. This is what conservatives prefer to paying public servants to serve the public. (Many other services, like paying parking and traffic fines and other civic payments, are like this too. Bad online services that are probably chosen due to some crooked political cronyism, with very weird and off-putting URLs and interfaces. Never simple "dot-gov" addresses. I live in Florida and doing anything official online feels like a scam.)

ummm I got a bit off track. Was gonna talk about the ridiculous amount of paperwork I have had to fill out despite how very low my income is. This system is a burden the falls mostly on those of us who cannot afford it, yet another way that the wealthy are favored. They can afford the time, effort, or to pay a professional because the amounts they save are orders of magnitude larger than mine. For example, on my second pass through the forms I recalculated the amount I owed. The potential savings are hardly worth the time I have put in. It's just a ridiculous system pretty much designed to make #USAmericans hate our government. Could be so much less painful. #IRS #taxes #uspolitics
