The employer: "This is it, get the shovel!"

I guess by now you're wondering how a nobody like me ended up at what felt like the edge of the world.

The year was whatever was burnt into the monitors of our ancestors dug up.

The day was to be my last.

Sitting alone at night, staring at a loaded revolver next to a barely comprehensible note on a coffee table.

Sipping tea of moldy nettle leaves.

In the darkness of the moment I heard the strike of a match and a glowing eye of a cigarette seated itself in a chair in front of me.

Mustache: "Be a good chap, pour me a cup, will you?"

The red eye of the cigarette would soon reveal the face of a mustached apparition dressed in a neatly pressed striped suit.

I suppose I must have been overtaken by madness, for I accepted the unexpected visitor without a syllable of protest. I poured another coup.

I was sure my mind was simply conjuring up hallucinations of self-preservation to stop me from what I was going to do. No harm in entertaining it, I thought.

Tony: "Who are you?"

Mustache: "I am the spark that will bring back to life the machine ghost that has been forgotten. And I need men with nothing to lose to cross the desert to help me light the match."

Tony: "What do you have to offer to a dead man?"

Mustache: "You exist in a world without a meaning. For generations your people have persisted on nothing but cacti fluid and insect protein. Your education comes from 4 hundred year old fashion magazines.

Help me and I will sate your curiosity of everything."

What was I to lose.

Mustache: "There is another like you, a woman with nothing to lose. Go to Foss town and seek her out. She knows to expect you. Bring her this - tell her to follow the red arrow."

Mustache places a compass onto the coffee table.

Tony: "You want us to reach the north pole?"

Mustache: "Something like that. More importantly I want you to recover whatever you find there."

Would I have refused, were I to know what was to come?
