The VAX11/780 wasn't just a star computer of digital equipment, but No.1 at CoCom's top10 international export charts. With 1.0 VUP DEC challenged IBM 360 systems and beat them in efficiency.
Launched in late 70s, the legendary 32bit computer was running @ 5Mhz on a KA780 CPU with up to 128 MByte of RAM. In VMScluster systems of 2/4 they delivered up to 3.5 VUPs.

@timhadley It looks like the hobbyist program is back, even. openvmshobbyist.com/forum/view Takes a fair bit of digging but there it is.

My boss in the 90s was an old DEC fan. Told me many stories of how good #DECnet and #VMScluster was. I owned a 600MHz 21164a Alpha in the late 90s myself, but only ever ran Linux on the thing. I still have it in my attic; it was the most expensive computer I've ever purchased and I can't quite let go of it, despite my Raspberry Pi being more powerful now 🙂
