Mashable: Haliey Welch recorded ‘Talk Tuah’ in front of a live audience at VidCon. It got messy.. “Haliey Welch, better known as ‘Hawk Tuah’ girl, continues to be followed by controversy at VidCon 2025. During a live recording of her podcast Talk Tuah Thursday night, which she co-hosts with her friend Chelsea Bradford, Welch and guest Whitney Cummings quickly lost the attention of the crowd.”

Mashable: VidCon 2025: YouTube legends Hank Green, Rosanna Pansino, and Dr. Pimple Popper reflect on how the platform has changed. “YouTube isn’t the same website it was 20 years ago, and creators Hank Green, Rosanna Pansino, and Dr. Sandra Lee (aka Dr. Pimple Popper) know that better than most. The three creators, who have been on the platform for 18, 15, and 14 years, respectively, […]

Freshly showered... Gonna fit in a Beat Saber workout while I wait for a shed-building kit to be delivered, then stream while I hand-make branded top free equality shirts to wear to #vidcon at joystick.tv/u/toplesstopics 😁

Photo of me smiling with wet hair while wearing my dark blue shirt with a decal of cartoon breast on it that says "imagine if people freaked out over violence and guns the way they do over breasts"

Never thought I'd live to see the day that something as "family friendly" oriented as the #vidcon newsletter would be positively promoting something like a rival site to something like the infamous #Onlyfans . Normalizing #sexWork has come a long way! (I know vidcon would never allow someone as "patriarchy unfriendly" as an anti-gender-specific-censorship progressive political commentator like me participate in a panel though, despite my twenty years of experience as a #contentCreator .)

Screenshot from the vidcon newsletter:

The Founder of OnlyFans Launches Platform Rival Subs.com

Former CEO and founder of OnlyFans, Tim Stokely, has announced his newest venture, Subs.com, a rival to his former subscription business OnlyFans. Tim founded the latter business back in 2016 with his brother Thomas Stokely. After selling 75% of the business in 2018, Tim took over as OnlyFans CEO and stepped down in 2021.

Since then, Tim has been fairly quiet, but it seems he's been working on building his newest venture, taking his learnings from OnlyFans and building a subscription platform that is more brand-friendly, targeting creators, podcasters, athletes, musicians, as well as OnlyFans' lucrative adult content creators.

The new subscription platform will allow creatives to offer 1:1 audio and video calls with fans, host exclusive video content, and offer paid subscriptions. It also features a collaboration function which allows creators to easily create and monetize collaborative content on the platform.

My first impression is that this platform shows promise — for three reasons:

It's coming from a founder with proven success in community building and a deep understanding of what superfans want.
The creator economy is evolving, and there is a growing need for creators to diversify revenue.
The platform isn’t just one thing. It’s got the benefit of hindsight, taking the good bits of OF and evolving the bad bits, creating a platform that's all-encompassing.

Brainstorming a script for a "Topless Topics FAQ" video that I can hopefully get filmed, edited and uploaded in time for #Vidcon next week. I'll try to make it more accessible than angry, even though hearing the same bullshit over and over does wear a feminist activist down (:

The beginning of a script:

Topless Topics FAQ Script

“Why do you make porn but refuse to call yourself a sex worker?”
“Why are you so hostile to nudists?”
“Why do you focus on topless equality, instead of normalizing full body nudity?”
“There are way more important issues in the world. Why do you care about flashing your tits online?”
“If women are allowed to go topless in public, then they’ll get raped more often!”
“Why don’t you make porn?”
“Aren’t you being a hypocrite if you put a paywall on any of your content?”

Still giving me emotional backlash to remember that we had JUST found out about my dad's cancer right before last year's #Vidcon, then after a hellish summer of being his all-hands caretaker, he was dead by November.

Logged into #vidcon in time to schedule meet-and-greets for #DanielThrasher and Aphmau (for the kids, idc myself) ✊ We only get two chances each, and I'm saving my last slot for #GraceHelbig (since we have so much in common) 🤞 I would have liked to meet #HankGreen as well so we could reminisce about OldTube and talk about cancer (given we both have experience with it...) but alas. Maybe I'll be able to somehow schmooze into getting a "Creator Pass" like I did in 2022, but I doubt it, since Vidcon has made getting into the hotel impossible even for high profile Influencers™️ unless they had Industry passes or invite-only Special Guest 😩

(I also hate that FanExpo, the new owners of Vidcon, made the M&Gs a "first come first serve" scramble...continuing the lottery system would have been a lot more fair, except they either needed to be stricter about staying within time limits (I gave up on both MamaTot and Chad Chad last year even though I "won" a lottery spot because the sessions ended without me ever getting up to the front, because the creators are too nice and would spend way too long with each person) or just let fewer people "win" so the lines weren't 200+ people long.

At least it's not the "camp out overnight" model like San Diego Comic Con...which sorry, there is not a celebrity in the world that I would be willing to sleep on cement overnight just in the hopes of getting an autograph, lulz.

(What's also funny is that I bought creator badges for my husband, SIL, and her partner so they can help me chaperone the kids, but I didn't bother signing them up for M&Gs because there are no featured creators they watch/care about, lol) (well...Matthew also watches Daniel Thrasher, but he doesn't care about meeting creators. He'd rather just play dumb games on his phone 😏)

so uh...turns out Grace Helbig, a very OG youtuber, is one of #Vidcon's "featured creators" this year (one of like, five not-tiktokers, lol) so I went to her channel for the first time in years and...she's a breast cancer survivor who gives away sex toys at the beginning of her videos?? So, like...interviewee maybe? (she does have 2.6 mil followers, but most of her videos seem to get under 30k views, so she MIGHT not be as unattainably famous as most of the other featured creators...either way, worth a shot I guess?

Lol wow, #vidcon is really shaping up to suck even more this year! Looks like they're going back to "first come first serve" timed meet-up sign ups, instead of a period of time to enter a "lottery" that was a far more sensible system. God help you if you can't take a day off work just to try to sign up with your favorite creator 🙃 I most likely won't even bother, since there are no creators on the list I care that much about to go through all that. Their lottery system was jacked up in that they had too many people as "winners" so unless you showed up to your meet and greet hours in advance (which you weren't supposed to do) then you'd still never get to the front in the queue--but "first come first serve" is not the solution! I heard that a big convention owner with a penchant for making conventions terrible had purchased vidcon, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. At least if vidcon manages to be even worse this year than last, I can officially never go again with no regrets 🙃.

I hate that I'm excited to go back to #vidcon in June, even though every year they screw over small-to-mid-level creators like me more and more, pandering exclusively to the super famous influencers du jour and their obsessive preteen fans. Vidcon just assumes we'll come anyway because there are no real #contentCreator convention alternatives, and for the most part they're right.

It's like I keep getting back together with an emotionally neglectful ex because my only choices are them, or being utterly alone 😭

I had a hard time falling asleep last night because I was daydreaming about what it would take to start my own #contentCreator convention in the #PNW (similar to #VidCon but with way more focus on networking and collaboration between small creators than enticing really famous people to come and selling merch and tickets to their adoring preteen fans).

It's an idea I've had for a while and it's still very Pie in the Sky but I just keep thinking about the steps I'd have to take to set it up, and also what I could possibly do to try to get other content creators to show up. I don't even live in Seattle, I live in Portland but I figure Seattle is a larger city and we'd have a better chance of getting people to show up maybe in the next couple of years, as I find more time to work on content as my kids get older and now that my dad is dead. I can have a better chance at befriending some content creators, maybe even some with some clout who can pull people that I can't as attendees, and see if it is actually possible to put something together by the year 2027 or so.

I have a history of signing myself up for too many projects and not having the spoons or time to fulfill them, but I really think this would be an awesome opportunity to connect small creators in a way that we haven't been able to online (every time I've joined some Discord or subreddit or whatever that's supposed to link small creators, it's just Minecraft and Roblox players dropping links to their own content without ever checking out anyone else's).

Anyway I know mastodon's not really the place to talk about this since I don't think anyone on here even watches YouTube videos, let alone makes their own, and who knows what social media platforms will even still be around in 2 years. But anyway it's just something I've been dreaming about for a while.

Gonna be real awkward at #vidcon when all the Tiktok starlets don't have a famous social media presence to point at as their justification for getting all-access "featured creator" passes.
