Another defacement of a #Volhynia monument in #Poland conducted by complete morons who pretend to write in Ukrainian it looks as if someone visually copied letters from a phone, not understanding what they really write 🤦

An eagle-like monument commemorating victims of Volhynia tragedy with an ugly graffiti at the bottom saying "Slava UPA" but in a incorrect alphabet, mixing Ukrainian and Latin letters

Yesterday #Poland and #Ukraine media quoted fragments from the joint statement of foreign ministers of both countries regarding #Volhynia exhumations, but in reality the statement was much broader. The original text in Polish has been posted here, but below I’m posting its English translation:

#Volhynia Massacres 80 Years Ago - #Ukraine and #Poland Presidents Set Example of Understanding and Solidarity

Showing maturity in addressing a divisive issue with class

by Bohdan Nahaylo

Extract

for many Poles this is a sad day of remembrance for the tens of thousands of victims of massacres which took place 80 years ago in the north-western Ukrainian region of Volhynia, largely Poles, and for which they blame the Ukrainians – and Ukrainians, the Poles

#Poland and #Ukraine presidents Duda and Zelensky attended a Sunday mass in Lutsk, which is administrative town of Volhynia oblast' in Ukraine, where 80 years ago ethnic purges started against Polish minority.

These purges known as #Volhynia massacres became a bitter part of Polish-Ukraine history and were driven by Ukrainian ultranationalist OUN-B who saw Poles as occupiers.

Since 2000's Ukraine and Poland institutes of national remembrance conducted lots of joint research for the sake of clearing that part of history. In 2016 Ukraine president Poroshenko paid a tribute to victims of Volhynia at a monument in Warsaw. Today's joint Zelensky and Duda remembrance coincides with 80th anniversary of the tragedy.

Traditionally, the party spinning the most attention to the tragedy was, not surprisingly, #Russia, who used it to sew divisions between Ukraine and Poland. This gave birth to the most absurd coalition where Polish nationalists, for whom Volhynia is the main hate point against Ukraine, saw Russia as the only major "defender" of their cause. The same Russia that killed hundreds of thousands of Poles since 1920, including the most notable massacre in Katyn.

Efforts to clarify the history of Katyn massacre has been also going on between Russia and Poland since 2000's, but ultimately they were stopped and reversed to a practical denial by Putin who saw the imperialist Soviet legacy as more powerful than peaceful cooperation in Europe.

Chances for repeated violence between Poland and Ukraine are close to zero, as there's now millions of Ukrainians living and working peacefully in Poland and generally in EU. Chances of Russia conducting another mass-scale massacre in Europe are still at all times high, as Putin revived the most vile version of Russian imperialism.

If you want to understand #Poland, you must know that in 1943 over 100,000 Poles were slaughtered in #Volhynia by Ukrainians; a genocide that has never been apologised for. Today Poles & Poland help Ukraine unconditionally. No questions asked. That's my people.
