@ManjaSchledorn @EUCommission the "next elections" were the parliamentary elections you just had in The Netherlands and the Czech elections, the Polish elections, etc. That's who's in control of the EU, the 27 member states, they're driving this, the EC is their glorified civil service. #WTFisTheCouncil

2025-10-30

@suijure What is "the will of the Europeans"? Do Europeans not already express their will in 27 European elections in which they designate their representatives in the 2 🇪🇺 institutions that control the EU? #WTFisTheCouncil

Since when does the European Commission represent Europeans v "global powers"? Who gave it a mandate to do foreign policy for both France and Austria or Latvia or Malta?

Again: who would you replace vdL with and who do you think the EUCO would replace her with?

2025-09-26

#WTFistheCouncil

2025-09-24

@gbrugman Thank YOU for being normal about it. :) Spreading the word about #WTFistheCouncil goes a long way towards no longer allowing our governments to hide behind "Brussels" as if the EU exists as a separate entity imposing things on them, as opposed to THEM making those laws.

2025-09-24

@gbrugman Important to point out that Mr. Breyer, a former MEP, does not say "the EU" because he knows who's lying here: the upper chamber of the EU legislator, ie member states, our national governments. Our governments ARE the EU and make EU law and in his article he clearly states that the Council, ie our national governments, is lying about the lower chamber of the legislative, the European Parliament. #WTFistheCouncil

2025-09-23

2025-09-21

@gerbrand @chatcontrol Denmark IS the EU.

Every time Mr. Hummelgaard goes to Brussels, he transforms from a Minister (executive branch at the national level) into an EU "Senator" (🇪🇺 legislative branch) who makes and negotiates and votes on EU law as a member of the upper chamber of the EU legislative branch, the #WTFistheCouncil
And this law is his baby:

@lori @randahl MEPs have no say in it. Once a country becomes an EU member, nobody outside that country does as there is no way to end a country's membership against its wish. Other sanctions are also not decided by MEPs but by the other 26 member states #WTFistheCouncil

@euobserver "the real democratic gap lies in domestic politics" 💯 #WTFistheCouncil

2025-08-31

#WTFistheCouncil

@christianschwaegerl what a great opportunity for EUropean journalists to educate Europeans on the best kept secret in EU politics: #WTFistheCouncil
To say nothing on how the EU budget works, how underfinanced the EU is or how uh... foreign direct investment works or what the Commission does (hint: not foreign direct investment).

2025-08-05

@jmkorhonen.fi the notion that this would be decided by the ECB board in Frankfurt, lol... No, the room in which that decision would be made is the EUCO Hummus Room in Brussels and the answer is: eurobonds (like any other war ever, the answer is: debt) and small countries are all the better for it. #WTFistheCouncil

2025-07-30

@boab @EUCommission I don't think most people commenting in this thread (nor most European journalists) have read even the brief explainer about what this "deal" is or can explain what they're mad about, but maybe I'm wrong. Most EUropeans have no idea and not much interest in how our Union works, who decides what or #WTFistheCouncil because the EU is booooring while US politics are "fun" and trashy and usually safe to rubberneck at from a distance. This has consequences: eupolicy.social/@Veza85UE/1139

@antaeus "the EU" doesn't buy stuff from the US, it's a free market economy, the Commission doesn't run a Soviet state that spends 600 billion of public money "we" are "giving". Private businesses invest in the US or any other country, not "the EU", 600bn is roughly the amount EU private businesses *already* invest in the US over 4/5 years. Also, this isn't a treaty, or much of an agreement, it's non-legally binding because how could it be, lol. #WTFistheCouncil

@KasperNicolaisen @EUCommission What a great week for #WTFistheCouncil lots of Europeans might finally learn who actually runs the EU (not your MEP...) I've seen a lot of (predominantly men, not that Sabine Weyand isn't used to it) helpful Mastodoners write How to Go to Trade War with Your Security Provider on Whom You Depend for Most Military Capabilities guidelines and they always start with join China, duh. I have some questions, such as: is China replacing US aid to Ukraine in your scenario?

2025-07-29

@pa79 @EUCommission er... Yes? #DidntReadTheSourceMaterial

Some of you are about to find out #WTFistheCouncil but only because 'merica is the Main Character and the centre of your universe, otherwise our Union is way too boring to learn its basics.

The political agreement of 27 July 2025 is not legally binding. Beyond taking the immediate actions committed, the EU and the US will further negotiate, in line with their relevant internal procedures, to fully implement the political agreement.
