Nevada County’s wildfire season came early, and the Richards Fire is our not‑so‑gentle reminder that fire danger is no joke.

From cheatgrass to dry lightning, it’s a perfect storm. Stay alert, clear your defensible space, and yes—consider hiring those adorable brush‑clearing goats.

As always have a fire evacuation plan and if that includes using an RV/trailer make sure to do the season readiness checklist so it is ready to drive safely if you need to go on short notice. This year we will not have twitter to count on coordinating wildfire info/animal evac options, etc. Be extra prepared.

Also if you don't have indoor air filters, now is a very good time to get some. If you wait until fire impacts your AQ they may not be available. Once smoke is pervasive, driving out may be dangerous due to low visibility; this happened in 2021.

As Alberta's fires burn, plz remember our own fire season will feature extra fuels thanks to a wet winter/spring and they're drying out early thanks to the PNW heatwave. Review firewise landscape guidelines, get things in order, and this may be a good year to remove anything flammable near the house (like juniper).
