So WordCamp US (#WCUS) is happening today (Wednesday) through Friday in at the convention center in Portland Oregon.
I couldn’t make the trek out to the PNW, but thankfully they’re livestreaming the whole thing!!!!
Check it out and I’ll be posting more as the week continues, I hope. I’m going to try and keep it all in this post. We’ll see how that goes!
These are my notes/thoughts from the event. Live blog-ish style. 😜
So far caught one showcase about WordPress and AI. Pretty cool. Check out AgentWP! Too cool!
Dub.co looks really cool. Like YoURLs on steroids. Very cool. Gonna check this out. It’s so cool how it’s open source and there is a FREE plan that’s very generous! Steven Tay, the CEO showed how Dub.co connects briefly with WordPress. But didn’t elaborate on how it connects and if there plugin or not. I’m not sure if it this will get me off of YoURLS or not.
There was an interesting talk on the history of Gravatar. Did you know it was the first Automattic acquisition? Now they are going to make it a profile/link-in-bio and snaz it up! It’s pretty cool how it verifies social accounts. New/old plugin Gravatar Enhanced will make using Gravatar much easier for users to use. New commenting stuff is coming to Gravatars!!!! This is going to be great as well. They are going to make an API for developers so this could be cool. Domain’s are how Gravatar is going to make money. Ronnie Burke, who works on the team, says making a 20-year-old project that a lot of the web is built on better is more important than making money. (We’ll see, says my cynical self.) Ronnie is doing a good job fielding questions, too.
✌️End Of Day One For Me!😎
Day 2 of WCUS 2024
The keynote was called:“Open Source Is Eating Software Faster Than Software Is Eating the World.”
JP is the GP and Founder of OSS Capital. Joseph Jacks is his full name.
OSS capital has 70 or so investments. Just invest in OS startups.
Love their thesis. $100million bucks invested over 6 years.
“Next big way of building software companies” – JJ
SaaS replaced package software. Commercial open source is like WordPress.com. This is what JJ thinks is the next wave after SaaS.
Love this and the giving back nature of OSS.
OSS is a smaller wave since to the main wave.
Love this. Open standard but then builds on top of it but allows others to use the main software. I.e. WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
Closed Core vs. Open Core
Open Core can be nefarious but done right is better. Like “Automattic.”
JJ is quite the entrepreneur.
Started the first Kubernetes company before OSS Capital.
Very difference between the two types are very different. Very international and remote teams. There’s clearly money in OSS.
Interesting talk.
I need to make sure I reach out and connect to JJ as I’m a huge proponent of open source software.
Just saw the Wapuu for WCUS ’24 this year in Portland! I love it.
I got my sessions picked out for the next two days. Let’s see how many I can make (virtually 😜).
There are definitely benefits to not going to WCUS in person.
- Not gonna get Covid from the conference.
- Able to multitask much easier with work and life.
- Able to pause the talk if needed.
- Closed captioning if needed.
- No need to search for a power outlet.
- No need to worry about if your portable battery is charged enough.
Privacy By Design talk
Started with Cambridge Analytica scandal. Opened people’s eyes. Data protection in one area can still effect others in other areas.
California has major privacy laws that are far reaching because they protect Californians online. There are also laws at the Federal level. Geez. Better be safe and focus on privacy!
“[Prevention is] proactive not reactive.”
Don’t add plugins like GA4 or Facebook Pixels willy-nilly. Present these to the client before you launch.
Privacy policies are key, and should be linked below forms submissions too.
End of Day 2 for me! Wish I was IRL so I could be at the networking party. Oh well. FOMO time!
Day 3 – Missed most of it due to previous engagements
Caught the talk with Neil Peretz on “How To Grow And Protect Your Brand.”
He is the head of legal for WooCommerce and Automattic.
Great diagram above describing your brand story. Talked about brand name and how to protect it.
Very interesting talk on branding and naming.
I’ve been taking in quite a bit of legal talks at WCUS this year. 😜
Descriptive Marks are hard to protect because they are widely used. Probably can’t get it a Trademark on it.
Lot’s of proof goes into making it show you’re special.
Suggestive Marks are easier according to Neil Peretz.
Arbitrary marks: Did you know that Haggen-Daz is made up?!!?!?! Made up by a guy in New York. All marketing. Lots of $$$$.
If you get a chance to watch this one back, Neil is a good presenter and a fascinating talk.
Probably that’s it for my WCUS this year. Off for a date night with my wife!
I’m glad they had a live stream of all the talks.
Wow, I came home from dinner out with my wife to hear what a shit show Matt’s Q&A was. My take is here.
