Andrew Douglas Appointed as Swansea BID Manager

Following the departure of Russell Greenslade, who has led the organisation as CEO for 16 years, Andrew will assume the leadership role after a successful five years as Head of Operations for Swansea BID.

His extensive experience within the organisation ensures a smooth transition and continuity for BID’s strategic objectives.

Building on Russell’s legacy, Andrew is committed to advancing Swansea’s reputation as a prime UK city to live, work, and visit. Swansea continues to experience unprecedented growth, with significant developments bringing new residential, retail, and office spaces to the city centre; and Swansea BID will continue to play a vital role in supporting businesses and enhancing the city’s appeal.

Speaking on his appointment, Andrew Douglas, said:

“It’s an honour to take the reins as Swansea BID Manager at such a pivotal time for our city. Swansea has a truly unique offer – a blend of urban regeneration with a stunning coastline right on our doorstep.

“My focus will be on showcasing Swansea on the national stage, sharing a platform with other leading UK cities, and demonstrating the incredible opportunities our city has to offer.

“I’m excited to continue driving Swansea BID’s initiatives to support our businesses and create a vibrant, welcoming city centre that draws people in and keeps them coming back.”

In 2024, 29 new businesses opened in the city centre, including Albert Hall, Palace Theatre, Bella Ciao, Joyato, and Grandad Needs His Medicine – all contributing to Swansea’s dynamic and diverse appeal.

Swansea BID’s efforts to maintain a safe, clean, and well-maintained city are also reflected through increased cleansing services and partnerships with South Wales Police.

Initiatives like the Swansea Against Business Crime Partnership, which resulted in 80 arrests in 2024, are testaments to BID’s commitment to safety and collaboration.

Andrew, added:  “As the city continues to evolve, Swansea BID will remain at the forefront, championing local businesses and ensuring Swansea thrives as a destination to visit, work, and invest. The opportunities ahead are tremendous, and I am eager to lead Swansea BID through this next chapter.”

Since its inception in 2006 as the first BID in Wales, and one of the first in the UK, Swansea BID has been a vital force in driving progress in Swansea city centre.

Its ambition has always been to propel the BID area forward through powerful and productive partnerships, transforming the area and providing unique training, business, and marketing support to BID businesses.

Simon Baston, director of LoftCo, says Swansea has a bright future in store thanks to the number of completed, ongoing and planned projects forming part of an investment worth over £1bn.

Dating back to 1864, the four-storey Albert Hall on Cradock Street now includes a food hall and bar, private entertainment space, offices, studios, visitor accommodation, a gym and a rooftop garden.

Its refurbishment was part-funded by the Welsh Government, with support from Swansea Council.

Mr Baston said:

“We’re delighted that the Albert Hall has now reopened, and the feedback from customers so far has been really pleasing.

“It’s just one of many projects that are transforming Swansea though, with the Palace Theatre building also due to reopen next month.

“Swansea Council has done a fantastic job in investing in the city and this has helped attract private sector investment too.

“The arena is open, new office schemes are nearing completion and there’s plenty more that’s planned for the coming years.

“This is helping raise Swansea’s profile across the UK, while creating jobs and more venues for local people to enjoy.”

Due to be operated by Tramshed Tech, the Palace Theatre building on High Street will be reopening on Thursday November 7.

Other schemes led by Swansea Council include the ‘Y Storfa’ community services hub which is being constructed at the former BHS unit on Oxford Street.

Part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal, a new office development is taking shape at 71/72 Kingsway, and plans are in place to revamp Castle Square Gardens.

A public sector hub accommodating close to 1,000 workers is proposed for the former St David’s Shopping Centre site as part of a larger development being led by Urban Splash.

Led by Welsh firm LoftCo, the development includes a food court, shared workspaces, meeting rooms, accommodation and a children’s play area.

Supported by the Welsh Government through the Transforming Towns initiative, the restoration and transformation of the 160-year-old building is one part of a £1bn regeneration programme that’s unfolding across Swansea.

Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “It’s great to have the Albert Hall officially open once again – and to see the fantastic transformation by LoftCo.

“Everybody interested in Swansea should take a look and see that they have another reason to enjoy their fast-improving city centre.

“This new use of a much-loved heritage building is already a hit with the local public who are enjoying its food and drink offer. Visitors will also benefit from its hotel-style accommodation and local businesses will enjoy doing work there.

“I’m delighted that the council was able to help bring this project to fruition and to save another essential part of Swansea’s heritage for future generations.

“The nearby Palace Theatre building will also soon come back to life – and we have big plans for buildings at the Hafod Morfa Copperworks which will help make that area a great visitor destination.

“The Albert Hall and lots of other projects are evidence that the city’s council driven £1bn regeneration is forging ahead – and there’s lots more to come.

“The combination of the Albert Hall and the Palace Theatre and 71/72 Kingsway projects – once operational – will add over 1,000 jobs to the city centre.”

Speaking of the Royal Albert Hall, here's what always comes to mind:

"I read the news today, oh boy: four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire, and though the holes were rather small, they had to count them all. Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. I'd love to turn you on."

The management of the Royal Albert Hall apparently had

a) no sense of humour
b) no grasp of grammar

and so assumed the Beatles had implied that:

c) The Royal Albert Hall was in Blackburn,
d) had 4,000 holes in it and,
e) the Beatles would love to "turn on" the Hall ...

... and demanded an apology. Which John Lennon flatly refused, which in turn caused the Hall management to ban performance of the song on their sacred grounds.

I started a jigsaw puzzle of the Albert Hall. There's a statue in front of it and I couldn't tell who it was if (I didn't think it was Prince Albert bc it was wearing a cloak and somehow just didn't seem like him, though granted, as an American I don't have a go-to image in my head.) So I looked up the Albert Hall on Wikipedia. This led me to read the article on the song "Hitler only has one ball," since some versions of the song reference the Albert Hall as the repository of the other one. It's a fairly lengthy article with commentary from various academics. From it I also learned that a Canadian military band once played the "Colonel Bogey March" (the tune of the Hitler song) on a state visit by some Japanese dignitaries and they took it as a reference to "Bridge over the River Kwai" and were insulted.
Anyway, just thought people might like to know.
And it is Prince Albert...in a cloak. Maybe he liked cloaks, IDK.

Albert Hall is a lovely venue to bring a little Christmas cheer with the Unthanks. Need to turn the heating on though - it was quite an old audience!

Went to see the wonderful #larkinpoe at #alberthall #manchester on Friday. An absolute kick ass live act.

They also did an acoustic version of one of my favourite tracks from the latest album "Blood Harmony", with a cracking version of "Southern Comfort".
