Picking up the thread from yesterday. To recap, today is the 29th and last day of Boēdromiōn. Since the ten days of an Athenian month are counted *down* rather than *up*, when you only have 29 days you have to skip a day you would have in a 30-day month 🧵

I promised I would come back to the controversy of the the "omitted day" in the ancient Athenian calendar and today is the day. 🧵

This year Boēdromiṓn is a "hollow" month, the first one of the year, meaning that it has 29 days rather than 30. It's worth talking a bit about how the choice of "hollow" vs. "full" is maybe the most made-up part of the made-up calendar generated for my bot

In Delphi, today is Boukátios 15, (probably the last day of) the Pythian Games. Two years to go until the Olympic Games in Elis

I made a very niche bot to toot today's date on the Athenian calendar @hemerologion

Happy Skirophoriṓn 17, it's almost the end of 2022/2023!

It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday! 🐏

A little late because my pc wouldn't boot this morning: #Hermes putting on his sandals, a #neoclassical work by François Rude.

🏛️ Dated 1827 CE, today in the Musée du Louvre, Paris

Photo of a neoclassical bronze sculpture of Hermes or Mercury putting on his sandals. The shot only shows his legs from the buttocks down, his hand touching one of the wings on his sandals as his foot rests on a rock.

Okay, I am more and more interested in #AncMed #BlueHumanities. This field just combines all of my interests. So, where to start? I already have two introductions about Greco-Roman piracy and one intro to Roman shipbuilding, but there has to be more, right? Where is all the good stuff? Any entry points you'd recommend? Boosts appreciated ...

The fascinating new Islanders exhibition at the Fitzwilliam asks us to think about the ancient world as a network society. #history #AncientHistory #AncientMediterranean #AncMed #Cyprus #Sicily #Sardinia rhakotis.com/2023/04/06/island

Was really torn about on which account I should post this due to the period discussed is the Enlightenment, but based on pages IX-XIII of the preface, I think this is a book that might be of huge interest to everyone working on the idea of "the West" or "Western Civilization" - including, but surely not limited to, #AncMed researchers and scholars. Graeber's project "There Never Was a West", will have to be completed/added on by someone else, and I feel our discipline might play a role in this.

The cover of Graeber's "Pirate Enlightenment". It's crimson red throughout with only a tiny yellow dot in the center. Title and name of the author are written in huge black letters.

Okay, @antiquidons , do your magic! As my partner is travelling to London tomorrow and willing to carry some books back for me:

Which recent publications in #AncMed, #AncMedReception , #AncientHistory, #Latin or #Mythology do I HAVE to read, that are also available at general bookstores (e.g. Waterstones)?

The longer the list of recommendations, the easier to find something good and interesting! Fire away!
