Mid-March Snow in Brooklyn (2021 and 2026)

At about 4:00 PM on March 12, 2026, a friend of mine who lines nearby in Brooklyn sent me a message on Delta Chat: it's snowing. I turned my head to the right to look out my window. Indeed, it was snowing. The snow would stop and start again. As of 5:12 PM, it is not snowing. This snow in March reminded me of an article I published on NLJ five years ago titled A Brief Mid-March Snow in Brooklyn. Then, like today, snow unexpectedly fell from the sky in March. While I remembered writing the […]

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 03-10-26

I missed publishing a set of Pook-Emu Bee links yesterday. But that just means I have more links saved for today. If you enjoy the (almost) daily links and commentary, you can also follow via feed. 1. Qatar Wants to Bolster Security Partnership with US After Iran's Strikes (Reuters [via gCaptain]. March 10, 2026.) If so they should explain this to their local international TV outlet. 2. The joys of data centers: Debunking the backlash against the $7 trillion AI building boom (Christian […]

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 02-27-26

Welcome to edition four of my Pook-Emu Bee links of the day. Pokemon turns 30 today (although as an American, its birthday from my perspective is September 28, 1998), so we will need some links for the occasion. 1. Imagination in Pokémon Red and Blue (Nicholas A. Ferrell at The New Leaf Journal. November 18, 2022.) & Winds of New Beginnings: Pokémon Gold & Silver (Nicholas A. Ferrell at The New Leaf Journal. October 15, 2020.) I published these two Pokémon essays on the generation one […]

Unusually Sober Commentary From Dmitry Medvedev

Reuters reports that Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's former placeholder President and current deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, insists that Russia comes in peace: We are not interested in a global conflict. We're not crazy. Dmitry Medvedev My first thought when reading this was that Mr. Medvedev sounds unusually sober here. Is there some kind of Alcoholics Anonymous for the Russian government elite or did someone take over his accounts? Aside: Back in the 2009-10 area I met my […]

Nostalgic News: Sega 32X Virtua Racing Has Been Decompiled

On January 30, 2026, Time Extension reported that the Sega 32X version of Virtua Racing has been decompiled. If you are reading this, there is a decent chance you may have questions such as "Sega 32what?" or "do you mean Virtual?" But for me, the headline represented a bit of nostalgia in my Miniflux feed reader. On December 6, 2024, I published an article on The New Leaf Journal titled Musing About Tesla Cybertruck at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The post was prompted by my photo of a Cybertruck […]

Final EoL For Vista-based Windows Server 2008

From Windows Vista effectively dead as Windows Server 2008 support finally ends (Usama Jawad for Neowin. January 15, 2026): Windows Server 2008 was supported via the Premium Assurance program until January 13, 2026. Although this support program no longer exists, volume licensing enterprise customers were grandfathered into the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which finally expired a couple of days ago for this particular SKU. What does the end of the last official support channel […]

Resuming Christmas Tina

I started "playing" (more accurately, reading) a visual novel called Christmas Tina on Christmas. As I explained in an earlier post, I am working on a NLJ review of Christmas Tina. Had you asked me when I started, I would have thought that I would have published the review well before mid-January. Alas, circumstances intervened. The circumstances include, but are not limited to, having been briefly sick and subsequently left with a persistent cough, "work work," other lengthly NLJ projects, […]

Today is Christmas Eve. This brings back a special memory for me. Seven years to the day, I had surgery to remove 8 inches of my colon on this festive day (I was discharged on the Friday the 28th of 2018). While all was well in the end, I do appreciate spending Christmas Eve at home instead of at NYU Langone in Manhattan (although I will note my room had a 75-inch TV so that was cool). I did get some good gaming done while I was recovering. See my references to playing Pokémon Trading Card Game and Mario Party (the original) in that period.

I'm keeping reading Shklovsky. This paragraph is not that funny for a non-Russian ear, but it reminded me of two great anecdotes I want to share. (01/03)

«Once they called me and asked to go to the <army> volunteer <Osip> Brik.

There was such a comrade in our squad. Everybody knew him: on his test drive, he crushed three cars at once».

VIKTOR SHKLOVSKY. THIRD FACTORY

Brick was, let's say, part of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky's extended family, a famous person in his own right and Shklovsky's mate. This story reminded me of a couple of literary anecdotes in the same vein.
