#AWIPS, the software that #NOAA #NWS operational meteorologists (the people who help issue watches, warnings and advisories) is entirely open source, and there is a compendium of tutorials for using this software on YouTube.

A moment of appreciation for my 12-panel, dual-radar AWIPS procedure. Six panels for KCLX and six for KCAE give me a really good look at most storms that'll be getting nearby from a couple vantage points with very little fuss. #WxMastodon #AWIPS #AWIPSAtHome

Tonight’s AWIPS perspective with a peek at a very capped 00z CHS sounding. This is one I use that gives me a broad look at the Carolinas as a region, which is helpful when I'm doing live coverage on Carolina Weather Group's YouTube channel. One of the tabs loads all of the NC and SC radars into one map (😱) to keep reflectivity and velocity very close at hand.

Changes to GOES-16 satellite data distribution over NOAAPort/SBN today. I think I'm okay with losing true full-disk data in exchange for higher-resolution data in the Northern Hemisphere in AWIPS. cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-

After 1800 UTC on 01 December 2022, changes were made to Full Disk #GOES16 (GOES-East) #imagery that is broadcast via the #Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN) for #AWIPS users (see the bottom section of this TOWR-S Communications).
One change was the increase in spatial resolution of the “Clean” Infrared Window (10.3 µm) from 6 km to the native 2 km (at satellite nadir).

All is quiet in my neck of the woods, but not so much across LA, MS, and AL. Very busy radar image from KDGX (Jackson, MS) in AWIPS with numerous supercells capable of producing tornadoes this evening within a PDS Tornado Watch.

Five-panel display from my installation of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). The main panel is a wide view of the KDGX radar out of Jackson, MS, displaying numerous supercell thunderstorms moving across Louisiana, Mississippi, into Alabama. Weather warnings are overlaid on the graphic, with several tornado warnings ongoing. On the left, four smaller panes: The top is a four-panel look at visible, infrared, shortwave IR, and simple water vapor across the Carolinas. The second pane from top is a regional radar view across the Southeast depicting ongoing storms. The third pane is the 11/29/2022 @ 00z sounding from Charleston, SC, depicting a dry airmass across the area. The fourth pane is a four-panel view of mandatory upper air levels with associated water vapor channels from GOES-East.
