I’m back looking for work after the end of my latest contract. As I always do at these times, I get myself a cheap PAYG SIM card to handle recruiter/client interviews so that I don’t have to share my personal number.

This time around, I decided to pop it into my old #BlackBerry Classic running #BB10 OS.

I’d forgotten just how lovely this thing is. The joy of a physical keyboard and a minimalist gesture UI. Sigh. What might have been if they had not fluffed getting BB10 to market.

Most apps no longer work but the key phone/SMS/contacts/email do. Just what I need.

And those BB ringtones!

@JessTheUnstill One of the big fuckups for BlackBerry was just the delays in getting BlackBerry 10, plus the Z10 and Q10, to market.

I got to use BB10 for a couple of months, and it was nice. It was built on QNX, with a modern swipe/gesture based UI built with Qt.

Arguably a better OS than the iOS and Android releases at that same time.

There was a feature called the Hub, which wax a unified inbox for your email messages, social posts, and text messages. Plus a modern app store, and separate personal/work profiles built into the OS.

There was a version without a physical keyboard (Z10) and with (Q10).

The problem is they didn't start working on it until 2010, and BB10 wasn't released until 2013.

For about two years before BB10 came out, BlackBerry didn't release any new phones.

Had BB10 come out earlier, it *might* have saved the company.

Sadly there is still no jailbreak for #BB10 devices, thus we cant replace the runtime libs on the devices, but statical linking should work just fine.

How I would like to make a #fediverse app for #bb10 but you know, certificates, signing and all that bs... :(

Every time I use email & calendar on an #Android I miss #BB10 :(
And #BlackBerry10 is over 10 years old now.

@onion @scummvm Used to work in development there. There *was* a way to sideload #bb10 apps, but I can't recall if it was through a desktop manager sw hack or via one of the internal sideloading tools. Lemme shoot a few feelers out to the old team and see if anyone has any knowledge / software kicking around still.

Sigh. #Playbook had so much promise...

Some afterthoughts:
1) Installing #GrapheneOS using their web-based USB installer worked like a charm! All preparing steps are well explained, and the rest is just clicking some buttons in chronological order.
2) I was more than happy to see that only a handful of apps are pre-installed. No bloatware, yay! :awesome:
3) Using a new phone after sticking to #BlackBerry's solid but outdated #BB10 operating system for the last six years feels like being suddenly propelled to a new century.

BlackBerry will switch of all essential infrastructure for its old #BB10 operating system at the end of this year, so unfortunately a decision has to be made…

Who here would like to use #Mastodon from older devices, such as #BB10, #FirefoxOS or #webOS? The current official codebase uses some modern #JS stuff that is not available on those platforms but a minimal client should be doable quickly. This would allow users on those platforms a life line to the most amazing 🍍 social network ever 😁

Do you folks think this is worth the effort? Keeping old devices able to talk to modern stuff is critical to keep them in use 🦊
