First known as 'monaka-no-tsuki' (もなかの月), it's likely that monaka originated at a sweet shop in Yoshiwara during the mid-Edo period.

Rice flour and water were first kneaded together...the dough was then steamed, rolled, cut into round shapes, baked and sprinkled with sugar.

Boar monaka. Sweets in the shape of boars are eaten in November to celebrate the opening of the sunken hearth in the tearoom (marking the beginning of the winter season).A chrysanthemum shaped monaka, eaten in September to celebrate the 'Chrysanthemum Festival'.Cat shaped monaka. We bought this to celebrate 'Cat Day' in February.Monaka in the shape of bells (filled with delicious chestnut paste).
