Am I obsessed with the German snowflake? Maybe. I was also testing out new thread.

I have to stop making lace and do things now. But I don't really want to.

Two lace snowflakes made with different white threads and a different stitch. V1 on the left is linen and whole stitch. V2 on the right is Diamant pearly thread and half stitch. They also have a gold thread around the outside edge and down the center of each snowflake arm.The lace wreath I made and both versions of the snowflake. Next to my pin box which has an orange cat head in a white lace-adorned portrait of Elizabeth I.

These last two pieces from fall semester of #bobbinlace course fit nicely to #Lacemas2025 week 2 because both of them are lined with sparkly golden thread.

On a snowy New England day, I'm working on a German snowflake today at . My v1 is here, in linen. Going to try a shiny white thread next.

Advent Calendar is here: redd.it/1ph4iy8 You can change the filenames to get days you missed. This was dez8.

A small snowflake--maybe 3 inches in diamater--in progress on my lace pillow. About half done, the white threads dangle off the bottom of the work area wound on my wooden Spanish bobbins.

The cover of my pin box (an old candy tin) is nearby with my open tin of pins and a couple of tools.

The tin is a painting of an Elizabeth I gown with the face of an orange cat instead. The completed snowflake. It has white thread mostly, but a streak of gold thread forms the centre of each arm of the flake.

It's pointy with 6 fold symmetry.

Free pattern from Jean Leader's . Click on the 2 over there for "Festive Ring" pattern.
jeanleader.net/calendar/index.

I don't have any rings, but in linen and DMC Diamant thread it has enough stiffness to stay put. That's the green on the outside, and the red in the inner passives ring.

This was my first time trying Diamant and it's really nice. Holds together great for at this scale anyway.

Same piece photographed on black and white to capture the colors differently.

A small wreath like bobbin lace piece. The inner ring is gold and red in shiny threads. The middle layer is a red linen that is a little loose and spaced apart. The outside edge is a shiny green in a fan motif that pokes out around the edge of another row of red linen.

I spent yesterday at Smith's Castle in N. Kingston RI. Doing a demo in a home of the right period for makes me happy.

But they have this mystery painting, with a sitter draped in black lace that haunts me.

They say they think they have the painter and the likely sitter's sister IDed, but the woman I talked to couldn't recall it in the moment. I will email her after the festivities and hope to learn the outcome.

smithscastle.org/

A large bedroom in the historic house called Smith's Castle. A bed, bureau, and chamber pot chair are around the background. In the foreground is my Ipswich Lace demo setup. We have an informational poster to the left, a table of examples and books to the right. My active lace pillow is set up on a cocktail height purple table in the center. The mystery portrait of a young woman, maybe in the 1760s era clothing. It's flowing white silk, with big lace engageants on the sleeves. Her bodice has a black bow in the center.

She seems to be wearing a white cap. But the weird part is the really long black lace that comes from behind her head and drapes down to her lap. It's an unusual use of black lace and I'm so intrigued by it. Maybe if we can find out her name and backstory we can learn more. Scratched on the paining in some rusty looking ink there is supposedly a name. They call her Miss Elizabeth because it says Elizabeth something. But I cannot decipher the writing myself.

I will email them in the future for the rest of their research on this.

My supervisor isn't sure how to interfere with the new project yet. But she's planning to.

This is the free pattern from Jean Leader. jeanleader.net/calendar/index.

A plotting calico sits on the folds of fabric to the right of the work table. The fabric is some bright red wool, with white fabrics tucked inside of it. What you can't see is that my thread is all hidden in the center of the folds so she can't find that right now.

She has a determined and miffed look on her face while I prepare the pattern, in the center of the image. It's called a Festive Ring, made of bobbin lace and looks wreath like, and is red and green and gold with a pattern diagram for it in black and white next to the ring photo.

Off to the left are the bobbins waiting to be wound with the thread she's sitting on.The Festive ring pattern is about 2/3 done here. I'm working my way around with green metallic thread on the outside layer, red thread in the middle, and red and gold forming a tight center section.

The bobbins are sitting around to the bottom and side and are attached to the bottom of the work area. A small gap of the pattern remains to be closed around the 3 o'clock area of the wreath.

A mystery: people I know are trying to find out what the lace pattern was for this lace that replaced human ligaments!

Does anyone know if the French patents would have this information? I know US patents would.

On insta there's a project underway with some theme prompts for lace. This week's theme is colors.

I don't actually do much in red and green--my brothers are both red/green color deficient. I do more winter white / gold/ silver sorts of things because of that. But those are future week themes.

But I did find one green wreath I did a while ago. So here's that.

A circular lace in progress, probably around 4 inches in diameter. It has an open center making it vaguely wreath like. It's done in green thread, and mostly you can see the brass pins in it as I'm working. A bunch of bobbins are still tied to the end of it in this image.

There are some tiny metal bells interspersed among the pins in the work. The final look of the wreath lace ornament with a hanger at the top and a tiny white ribbon attached around 1 o'clock.

It's in a gift box on cotton batting, ready to go to its recipient at the lace guild gift exchange. The tiny metal bells are easier to see now, scattered across the wreath.

Every year Jean Leader makes a . Each day a new piece of lace is revealed behind the doors.

Today's piece is one of the special ones that offers the pattern too. Click on the 2 below the image to see the instructions for this tiny wreath.

I might try it. I need a little ornament for a gift package.

I had a #bobbinlace course last weekend. I finished my #Withoflace excercise that I had begun on June with the scrollls. Point ground is not that pretty but small tally turned out really nice.

On the other picture I have the #idrijalace butterfly I finished earlier this fall. I managed to give it a background after some struggles. I mounted piece of second hand silk scarf to a second hand wreath base. Idea was perhaps better than execution but now it's tested at least.

~

Toisessa kuvassa on aiemmin syksyllä valmistunut #idrijanpitsi perhonen.

Someone at the lace demo yesterday pointed me to this new effort for , some kind of celebration of craft and making. I haven't looked into it really yet, but just found the site to dig in.

We will try to get in for sure.

Some exquisite nerd has quilted 100 digits of pi.

At the @morseinstitute.bsky.social event today.

I demo'ed in the lobby at their ongoing fiber art installation. My lace pal somehow got bobbin lace drone footage....

My embroidered boots were noticed.

A wall hanging quilt that consists of a gray background and small squares of vibrant colors that appear to be a code of some kind.

A sign on the wall adjacent to it says: 100 digits of pi. Can you see the pattern?

The top row has 3 blocks.
The next row has 1 block, space, 4 blocks, space, 1 block, space, 5 blocks, space, 9 blocks, space

And each row continues with the appropriate digit represented as a set of blocks. A zero is a cut out hole block.

It's wonderfully nerdy. And pretty.A shot of me talking with two people about bobbin lace from above the atrium where I'm standing.

My lace pillow is there with about 80 bobbins splayed out and a piece of black silk Ipswich lace being made in the center.A front view of my table while I'm talking to a visitor about how to make lace. I also brought a piece of tatting and a piece of needle lace to show other kinds of lace that are more portable than this big lace pillow and all the bobbins.

Here's one iteration of the story of the three dresses.

My lace friends and I notice that the Sargent lace was used twice, but Mercy's lace was different. One of my friends is trying to recreate the Sargent lace.

Finished these two well before Christmas. I started in April with cyanotype backgrounds, continued in May-June with candle motif and in September-October with the deer. Got them from the framer yesterday. Now I just need to decide if I keep them or give them as presents.

Tämä kaksikko valmistuikin hyvissä ajoin ennen joulua. Huhtikuussa tein syanotypiataustat, touko-kesäkuusss kynttiläaiheen ja syys-lokakuussa kauriin. Kävin hakemassa nämä eilen kehystämöstä. Nyt vaan pitäisi päättää pidänkö nämä itsellä vai annanko joululahjaksi.

Processing some donor books for our library today, and one came in with lace from ! I was delighted to see some Rauma lace patterns. We didn't have any before.

Front of a small softcover book. It says Ristnippu and then has more Finnish text just below that. It has two white lace trimmed items as a photo. One is square and one is round linen cloth with lovely lace edging. Back cover of the lace book has a wide white lace running up the left side. Three text boxes describe the lace on the right in Finnish, English, and German.

English part says:
Ristnippu is a sequel to Stjernuddi, Lace Group Manuela's first book about Old Rauma Point Ground Lace. Some of the laces have been made round and all the patterns have prickings and working diagrams.
