#Bragg gratings and #Brillouin lasers.

optics.org/news/16/12/6

Have been put to work by a team at #Sydney Uni to do some very useful stuff (I s'pose) with #Pure #Laser #Light

<quote>
... the Bragg gratings are reconfigurable: they can be written, erased and re-tuned after creation using only laser light, without needing to refabricate the device. This allows chip-scale lasers to be programmed on demand for low-noise single-mode or cascaded multi-mode operation.
...

It’s a general framework for controlling optical processes on photonic chips.”

... photonic chips, should lead us to cleaner sources of quantum light and frequency comb lasers. These have emerging applications in communications and advanced navigation technology such as GPS.

#HouseRepublicans are summoning Manhattan DA #AlvinBragg to #Congress after #Trump’s #conviction on all counts in his #ElectionInterference #FalsifiedBusinessRecords NY trial.

The #House #Judiciary Cmte’s select subcmte on the *weaponization of the federal government* on Fri invited #Bragg & one of his prosecutors, Matthew #Colangelo, to testify on June 13. The cmte said the hearing “will examine the unprecedented political prosecution” of Trump.

The cmte is led by #GymJordan.

While I’m amazed and mesmerized with the court outcome today, I’m also having an overwhelming sense of gravity.

I think no matter what the jury had returned, I would have been amazed. The very spectacle itself is amazing. Justice was carried out by the very happening of a fair trial; I’m thankful for that and I agree with the verdict.

But this is not good for our country. Celebrating a former president’s conviction is a testament to how off the rails we’ve gotten. MAGA is toxic; Trump himself is and breeds toxicity.

I’m happy for justice. I’m sad for where we are and how we got here. No Trump supporter is going to change their mind because of these convictions, that would’ve happened years ago if their minds were to ever be changed.

History have mercy on us.

Just goes to show you what the pundits/experts know 🤷‍♂️
----
The decision to convict #Trump on all 34 counts is significant. Jurors could have acquitted him on some and convicted on others. But the fact that they went all-in, and relatively quickly, suggests they believed the wider story prosecutors told at trial. It is a full-throated win for #Bragg and the worst possible outcome for Trump.

Trump’s conviction on all 34 counts is a full-blown victory for DA #AlvinBragg

I wonder what the appeals process will look like. Everyone is (correctly) focused on today's adjudication and July's sentencing, but what about the appeal?

Von A. Passenheim. Von A. Passenheim.

When Trump's #DOJ investigated and prosecuted Michael Cohen for his role in the hush money payoff, then Attorney General #BillBarr ordered the Southern District of New York to cease its investigation of #MichaelCohen’s co-conspirator--Donald #Trump.

The failure of the DOJ to pursue Trump in 2018 was #PoliticalCorruption at its height. The fact that Manhattan District Attorney #AlvinBragg picked up the prosecution three years later is a credit to #Bragg—not a ground for criticism.

Text Shot: The fact that Bill Barr was able to quash the federal investigation into Trump also explains the central legal theory of the state prosecution. Trump is charged with a state crime of falsifying documents in furtherance of a second crime—election interference, which is a federal crime.

Many observers were initially skeptical of Bragg’s legal theory, but some have come to believe that Bragg has a strong case. See Mark Joseph Stern in Slate, I Was a Skeptic of the Stormy Daniels Prosecution. I Was Wrong.

Stern writes,

Last year, I was uncertain whether this scheme, while sordid, rose to the level of a felony offense.

I am now convinced that, if proved that [Trump] took these actions, it surely does.

Donald Trump’s Trial of the Century

“Would Trump have lost the 2016 Presidential election if #StormyDaniels had gone public with her story?

Prosecutors in Manhattan think maybe so. This question is at the heart of this week’s criminal trial against #Trump—the first against a former President in American history. Trump faces thirty-four felony counts of falsifying business records, which the Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin #Bragg, claims was part of a scheme to “conceal damaging information and unlawful activity from American voters before and after the 2016 election.”

Text Shot: In 2006, at a celebrity golf tournament on the shore of Lake Tahoe, Donald Trump met the adult-film star Stormy Daniels. According to Daniels, things got intimate. (“The sex was nothing crazy,” she would go on to say.) A decade later, Trump was running for President, as a kind of Republican uber-family man, drawing crucial support from conservative, evangelical voters. Daniels decided to go public: her encounter with Trump had taken place while he was already married to his third wife, Melania. Searching for an outlet that would handle the story with the delicacy it required, Daniels’s agent reached out to the National Enquirer.

A day earlier, the Washington Post had posted the “Access Hollywood” tape on its Web site. Trump could be heard talking about grabbing women by the genitals. The Republican Party was freaking out.

#Trump urges the Court to reject the DA #Bragg’s "invitations to expand the #GagOrder, which is already an unlawful prior restraint that improperly restricts [Trump's] campaign advocacy."

The filing also seems to accuse Judge #Merchan of impropriety once again. During last week's hearing, Trump atty Todd Blanche suggested that Merchan was complicit in the DA's prosecutorial misconduct re: discovery obligations, Merchan was pissed off.

NERD WORD OF THE WEEK: Contumacy
Contumacy: A legal term that refers to a person’s refusal to follow judges’ orders or appear in court when summoned. Someone who is contumacious could be found in contempt of court. In #Bragg’s written request to expand the gag order, he asked #Merchan to warn #Trump that his “recent conduct is contumacious and direct him to immediately desist.”

Contumacious indeed. "#Bragg additionally asked the judge to 'warn [#Trump] that his recent conduct is contumacious and direct him to immediately desist”' and to implement sanctions against Trump if he does not comply." Trump's approach to #justice: tails I win, heads you lose. We all lose.
