@mimarek1
Pfft, all the "nebulas" in TNG era trek look like Mutara Nebula anyways. 🤦‍♂️

Oh snap, is that Dr Elias Giger, inventor of the Cellular Entertainment System that achieves immortality, right there on the Voyager bridge?

I like how paranoid this episode is.

bell hooks on the difference between cathexis and love

From all about love by bell hooks, pg 5-6, reflecting on M Scott Peck’s definition of love as “the wil to extend one’s self for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s ‘spiritual growth'”:

Affection is only one ingredient of love. To truly love we must learn to mix various ingredients—care, affection, recognition, respect, commitment, and trust, as well as honest and open communication. Learning faulty definitions of love when we are quite young makes it difficult to be loving as we grow older. We start out committed to the right path but go in the wrong direction. Most of us learn early on to think of love as a feeling. When we feel deeply drawn to someone, we cathect with them; that is, we invest feelings or emotion in them. That process of investment wherein a loved one becomes important to us is called ‘cathexis’. In his book [M. Scott] Peck rightly emphasises that most of us “confuse cathecting with loving.” We all know how often individuals feeling connected to someone through the process of cathecting insist that they love the other person even if they are hurting or neglecting them. Since their feeling is that of cathexis, they insist that what they feel is love.

THAT PHASER THING…why don't they do that more often??!?

As mentioned earlier, Chakotay saved Voyager but he wasn't seen for most of the episode and he only had a few lines at the very end. I felt that Chakotay was an underutilized character on the show.

Signing off now. Good night and have a nice weekend.

This neural energy could have possessed someone and have them write out why it’s steering Voyager away from the nebula. But that’s too logical.

Janeway transfers Voyager's command codes to the EMH. Is that the start of the idea of an Emergency Command Hologram?

This is an odd episode in that while Chakotay was the "hero" of the story and saved Voyager, he was hardly in any scenes and only had a few lines at the very end.

Some initial trivia: This was the debut of Janeway's English gothic novel. Mrs. Templeton was portrayed by Carolyn Seymour. She had several memorable guest roles:
- Romulan Commander Toreth (TNG's "Face of the Enemy")
- Commander Taris (TNG's "Contagion")
- Mirasta Yale (TNG's "First Contact")
