BILL MOYERS, 91
Mastodon Post
So sorry to learn of the death of journalist Bill Moyers. He had a remarkable career that was interesting not always in ways he would have wanted. While he was a conscientious and accomplished journalist, his work for Lyndon B. Johnson tarnished his reputation for integrity. Too bad about the LBJ thing. His TV producer, Charlie Rose, went on to be far better known in front of the camera. Long before Rose scuttled his own career evidently permanently, he hosted my favorite television program of any sort ever, CBS News Nightwatch. Bill Moyers presented a series of programs of massive importance to me: "Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth." The quality of Moyers' own comments was mixed but he asked Campbell questions that brought tremendous rewards. One Jacqueline Onassis, of whom you may have heard, suggested that the series be published in book form. The book is of immeasurable value. So, Bill Moyers was somewhat like the heroes in myths who had great successes along with other adventures that went less well but all of it was done on a large, mythic scale. Though I enjoyed Bill Moyers' opinion pieces on CBS, I, personally, will remember him most for making The Power of Myth happen. In my personal opinion, he was a very good man. RiP
