Cheekface release razor-sharp and hilariously self-aware LP, Middle Spoon

Out today, Cheekface‘s fifth album Middle Spoon is a razor-sharp exploration of the chaos that comes with navigating modern life. To celebrate, the LA trio have also dropped a video for quirky opening track “Living Lo-Fi,” directed by Baby Pony Food. 

In it, Cheekface stars with Chris Farren in an ill-fated attempt to make a music video that gets worse and worse, culminating in a dramatic courtroom finale. Because of course it does.

Across Middle Spoon, vocalist/guitarist Greg Katz, bassist/vocalist Amanda Tannen, and drummer Mark “Echo” Edwards continue to balance absurdity and introspection with uncanny ease, offering a sardonic take on everything from late-stage capitalism to the contradictions of self-improvement.

The album’s sound is as eclectic as its subject matter, with guest spots from Jeff Rosenstock (baritone sax), McKinley Dixon, Skatune Network, and Catbite  bringing layers of punk, ska, and indie energy to the mix. It was written throughout 2024, produced and recorded by Greg Cortez at New Monkey Studio and 64Sound in Los Angeles. As always, the cover art was designed by Tannen.

With biting satire, witty wordplay, and an anarchic spirit that bursts through on Middle Spoon, Cheekface once again perfectly capture the awkward, hilarious, and poignant chaos of being alive in 2025.

Ik schreef voor @OndergewaardeerdeLiedjes over de band Cheekface.

Cheekface komt uit Los Angeles en bestaat sinds 2017. Greg Katz is de zanger en gitarist, Mark Edwards is de drummer en Amanda Tannen is de bassiste. In totaal heeft de band al vier studioalbums uitgebracht. En bovendien ook nog een livealbum en twee EP’s. Het is een band met de quirkiness en de songwriter skills van een They Might Be Giants. Voeg daar een kruimeltje Cake aan toe en dan heb je een beetje een idee wat de sound is. De songs van de band zijn trefzeker en de teksten toveren regelmatig een glimlach op je gezicht vanwege de heerlijk droge humor. Maar vergis je niet, humor is dan wel een belangrijk element, maar de songs zijn gewoonweg te goed om Cheekface puur een ‘lollige band’ te noemen.
