A view from the Northeast.
Churches populate the breadth of the U.S. national park system, from the barrier islands of South Carolina to the Pacific Islands of Hawaii, from New England to the American Southwest. Some still house active congregations, while others are of historical interest but no longer used for worship.

Lovely day out yesterday with the Gransden ringers for their spring #bellringing outing. Love visiting different churches, not only for the chance to ring on different bells, but to see a whole range of ages of church architecture. The first church looked very Norman (1066 & all that) on entering, which is unusual in itself, but look to the east end and suddenly*bamb* Georgian chancel complete with ceiling moulding! The next church was signposted outside as "notable saxon church". Lovely chunky tower arch. And then a church with a whole mix of styles including this classic perpendicular window, I guess the later end of the style based on the angular arch (?15th century?), but don't quote me on that.

As Jones' reminder that his own book White Too Long has been censored by the Trump regime calls us to see, there's a huge push to obliterate the real history of the US when it's deeply unflattering — to white supremacists and white Christian nationalists. If you want to delve into that real history vis-a-vis the sordid story of lynching, a valuable resource is the book Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America.
(continued from /1) "I tell the story of white Christians in Atlanta streaming straight from church services to board special trains to take them to participate in the man hunt and lynching of Sam Hose (born Samuel Thomas Wilkes) in nearby Newnan, which took place on April 23, 1899, two years to the day after the lynching of Joseph McCoy."
"[The] proximity of white churchgoing and lynching was common throughout the U.S. In my book, White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity, (which has now been banned by the government at the US Naval Academy)," (continued in /2)

Our Lady, Star of the Sea & St. Winifride (RC) church, Amlwch, Anglesey. The only other example I've seen is in Lima, Peru.
It is mostly concrete, including the ribs, which have design and material flaws, long leading to a leaking roof, though restored and reopened in 2011. In 2021, it was closed again due to continued structural problems.
