Monument to Nicolaus Copernicus, Olsztyn, Poland

Nicolaus Copernicus was the administrator of the common property of the Warmia cathedral chapter. He resided in Olsztyn castle twice. The first time was when he served a three-year term as administrator, from November 8, 1516 to November 9, 1519. The second period of Copernicus’ stay in Olsztyn was connected with the last war with the Teutonic Order. After the plunder of Frombork by the Teutonic Knights, Copernicus sought refuge in Olsztyn castle, and then administered the chapter’s property from January 23, 1520 to the end of October 1521. The administrator in these areas managed the land, exercised judicial power and was responsible for tax matters.

Within the walls of Olsztyn castle, Copernicus wrote the text of the first book of “De revolutionibus…” - the work of his life, which “stopped the Sun and pushed the Earth from its foundations”.
