Bare to the waves slapping against sunburnt thighs, the salt a lick to the flesh, protective lotions stripped away, we were in love with clouds, keening gulls, and endless afternoons, contrails the only sign of someone else’s schedule, the world’s ambitions that would not mark us for years. #50WordFiction #DarkSummer

The next word prompt for the #50WordFiction challenge #DarkSummer is "bare." Participants may jump in at any time using the hashtags. A photo prompt is provided if it helps, but it is also ok not to take it into consideration when crafting your 50-word piece. Word prompts are also only suggestions. And the word itself does not have to appear among the 50 words posted. "Dark Summer" can be any kind of dark you chose, not necessarily horror. Enjoy your week.

Obviously, not all my writing for #50WordFiction #DarkSummer will be thematically "dark." I have to follow my mood. "Mood ring" for today reads blue: "relaxed, at ease, calm, lovable." 😆
At sunset on the boardwalk beside Miami beach, Altair feeds the tiny, retiring common ground doves from his hand. It had taken him months to get them to trust.
Sitembile rests her head on his shoulder, watching. She had come to understand something deep and reassuring in these ministrations.

Feel free to join the #50WordFiction challenge for #DarkSummer using the weekly prompt and hashtags. I'd love to "see" you there. 💜 🦋 🌺 🌞
A few weeks ago, I started a prompt-based 50-word fiction challenge I conducted last year. This year, the theme is "Dark Summer." I provide a word and a picture at the beginning of the week, and participants respond during the week with 50-word fiction(s) using the hashtag(s). You may also use your own photo or picture. This week's prompt is "dove." The use of the prompt or the prompt word is not required. #50WordFiction #DarkSummer

Early morning heat-baked air above and the water--at this depth?--may as well be cool. Early morning white above and the water--at this depth?--may as well be night. A continuity of life, swarming things, and the background hum of men.
She sat on the edge of the dock long after all the others had gone, tracing languid circles in the water with a toe and feeling infinitely and profoundly alone. Thunder rumbled low in the distance as rain made its way across the lake, piercing through the thick Summer air.
We swam with water moccasins, rippled surfaces with stones, dreamt under blue skied blankets, rocked to wave rhythms slapping undersides of boats like persistent mothers, their concerns a muffled backdrop to bugs, the feel of silt, a blade of grass, a cloud, a song, a taunt, the flesh of fruit. #50WordFiction #DarkSummer

A couple of weeks ago, I restarted a prompt-based 50-word fiction challenge I conducted last year. This year, the theme is "Dark Summer." I provide a word and a picture at the beginning of the week, and if you would like to participate, respond during the week with your 50-word fiction(s) using the hashtag(s). You may also use your own photo or picture. This week's prompt is "lake." Your piece doesn't have to include the prompt word. It could serve as the setting. #50WordFiction #DarkSummer
My mind insists on a memory, tenuous and gossamer, of my sister and brother and I playing communion on the Louisiana bayou behind Granny’s house, the body the mud, the water full of silt, our congregation an invisible throng of the hopeful and needy, the broken and vulnerable.

Last week, I restarted a prompt-based 50-word fiction challenge I conducted last year. This year, the theme is "Dark Summer." I provide a word and a picture at the beginning of the week, and if you would like to participate, respond during the week with your own 50-word fiction(s) using the hashtag(s). What did I believe about myself as I buried this box in the shade of Granny’s oak trees when I was just a girl? I couldn’t imagine what I would feel like today—old, frail, bereft of my power, believing the trees whisper something mournful of my fate.

It is raining. Again. Every day since February 3rd. A mist. A downpour. A drizzle. A gusher. Every day, gray wet. Bleak. Dank. Smelly, mossy feet wet. Until earlier today. After 12 weeks, 3 days, the sun appeared. For a moment. Blazing. Bright. Shadows on porch. Shade beneath trees. Miracle.
I am picking up a prompt writing exercise I started last year: #50WordFiction. At the beginning of the week, I'll offer a photo prompt and a word prompt. The theme is #DarkSummer. If you would like to participate at any point, use the hashtag, and if you would prefer, your own picture. The first prompt word is "shade." Week 1.
