Almost sunrise in the Utah desert.

Spokes of pale orange clouds against a blue sky radiate upward from the dark brooding hump of distant mountains. A flat horizon defines a vast plain, but from near its vanishing point below the mountains, a sharp-cut canyon yawns toward us, gaping wider from its brick red vertical rim, its crumbling upper talus slopes, and a monolithic blond sandstone incised into a deep V, its humps and bulges of stone defining the twists of a narrow gravel wash at the bottom, sparsely attended by scattered bushes. A short tussok of grass in the close right hand corner, and some protruding slate-like rocks show that we're standing on the unstable and possibly overhanging rim.
