ViewSonic’s new 14 inch dual-screen monitor weighs under 3 pounds, sells for $350

There are a growing number of laptops with dual screens designs, or a single large display that folds in the middle. But for the most part these laptops cost a lot more than a typical single-screen notebook.

You know what’s cheaper than paying for a dual-screen laptop to get extra screen space? Buying a portable display – you can find plenty of decent models in the $800 to $300 price range. […]

MINISFORUM MDSA156 is a $231 portable dual-screen monitor

MINISFORUM is probably best known for making min PCs, but one of the company’s latest products is a display… or rather two displays. The MINISFORUM MDSA156 is a portable dual-screen monitor with two displays connected by a laptop-like hinge, allowing you to fold the device in half for easy transportation and storage and unfold it when you want plenty of screen space.

It’s also one of the most affordable devices in the growing category of portable dual-screen displays. Earlier this year I noted that this type of product used to sell for $500 and up, but prices for some recent models had fallen below the $400 mark. The MINISFORUM MDSA156 costs just over half that much: it’s available from the MINISFORUM website for $231.

For that price you get a device with two 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS LCD displays with up to 250 nits brightness. They’re connected by a hinge that allows you to either position that one is above the other, lie them flat on a table, or tilt them so that they’re nearly back-to-back in a tent-like configuration so that you and the person sitting across from you can each see one screen.

It’s sort of like having a single 23.8 inch, 1920 x 2160 pixel display with a big line through the center. But while you could theoretically expand a single application across both displays, this sort of design really comes in handy for multitasking, allowing you to position one app or set of apps on the top screen and a different set on the bottom.

The MDSA156 also has a pair of stereo speakers built in, two USB Type-C ports that can be used for power and video input, an HDMI input, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

MINISFORUM says you can use a single USB Type-C cable to connect the monitor to a computer for both power and data… assuming your PC outputs enough power over USB. Since the system is designed for use with 30W or higher power supplies, if the screen flickers or has other problems, you can use one USB-C port for power and the other (or the HDMI port) for video input.

The MINISFORUM MDSA156 has a metal body with an integrated kickstand. The company says that the whole thing measures about 0.95 inches thick when folded in half, and weighs either 2.2 pounds or 3.5 pounds (depending on whether you believe the 2.2 pound weight listed in a promotional picture of the 3.5 pound weight listed in a spec sheet on the MINISFORUM website).

Lilbits: Humane looks for an exit, another dual-screen monitor is coming, and Antec works with AYANEO to bring a handheld gaming PC to market

UPERFECT is running a crowdfunding campaign for another dual touchscreen monitor, this time with a choice of 16 inch or 18 inch models featuring 2560 x 1600 pixel, 120 Hz displays. After a pretty disastrous launch of its first product, the makers of the Humane Ai Pin are looking to sell the company. And there may be another name in the handheld gaming PC space […]

Portable dual-screen monitors are getting cheaper

A growing number of companies are offering portable monitors with two displays. Last year we reported on UPERFECT’s UStation Delta, which has two displays that can be stacked vertically or folded up like a laptop. And earlier this year we told you about the DUOONE portable monitor that comes with two 16 or 17.3 inch displays.

But those systems are rather pricy, with the USTATION Delta currently selling for $500 and up, while the DUOONE starts at $699.  But cheaper options are starting to arrive, including some models with prices well under $400.

The first one I spotted this morning is the JSAUX FlipGo, which recently one an iF Design Guide award. This dual-screen portable monitor actually has suggested retail prices starting at $559, but you can reserve one for a pledge of $379 or more through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Displays should begin shipping to backers in May, 2024.

What you get for the starting price is a portable monitor that looks a bit like a laptop when folded, but which reveals two 13.5 inch, 2256 x 1504 pixel, 60 Hz displays connected by a hinge that can open at angles up to 180 degrees.

The 13.5 inch model is an IPS LCD display with up to 400 nits brightness and 100% sRGB color gamut. It has an aluminum alloy body and weighs 1.1kg (2.4 pounds), making it a reasonably portable devices.

But the base price doesn’t include a stand. The FlipGo has a set of four strong magnets in the back, allowing it to snap onto supported stands or other hardware, and backers can add a VESA adapter, stand, or “Flex Folio” case that acts as both a stand and protective cover. Accessory prices range from $30 to $50 during crowdfunding.

Backers can also pay more for “Pro” models with a few additional features, models with touchscreen displays, or larger models with 16 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel, 16:10, 60 Hz displays that support up to 500 nits brightness and weigh 1.6 kg (3.5 pounds).

Ports vary depending on the model, but each version accepts HDMI and USB-C/DisplayPort input and acts as a USB hub with a few additional USB Type-C and Type-A ports.

Prices during crowdfunding start at $379 for the FlipGo 13.5 without a touchscreen or $429 for a touchscreen model, while 16 inch models will set you back $549.

Want something cheaper and/or don’t want to deal with crowdfunding and waiting until May to receive a portable dual-screen display?

Recently a number of companies have begun selling cheaper models on Amazon, with list prices ranging from around $300 to $400, although some are on sale with coupons that bring the price down under $300 at time of publication:

For the most part, these portable dual-screen monitors seem like they’re cheaper than the higher-profile ones for good reason. They tend to have lower-resolution displays that are less bright, for example. But if you’re just looking for a relatively inexpensive way to add two extra screens to your laptop on the go, they might be able to do the trick.

DUOONE is a dual-screen portable monitor with Smart KVM support and multiple inputs

This week Asus unveiled a portable monitor with foldable OLED display that lets you use the Zenscreen Fold MQ17QH as a single 17.3 inch display or two 12.5 inch screens. But with a $2000 price tag, this foldable monitor is going to be a pretty tough sell.
There may be a cheaper option though… if you don’t mind putting up with a line between the two […]
