Thomas Scott co-founded the Church Missionary Society. He says that love of the brethren, expressed in active kindness, is required as evidence of faith in Christ, and love to his name (Matthew 25:31-46).

I just finished a book where an otherwise orthodox woman, writing about abuse in the church, made a single reference to “missionaries” as historically those laying the ideological groundwork for slavery.

How can you sure love to Christ’s name?

THOMAS SCOTT (1741-1821) SERMON IX "So that love of the brethren, shewn in active kindness, is uniformly required as evidence of our faith in Christ and love to his name."

Clement of Alexandria, early Christian teacher, on gleaning. Edges of crops were to be left for the poor and strangers to harvest. The law trained the rich to large-heartedness, to forego of their own, and provide for the poor.

Today, would most Christians want Moabites anywhere near their property? The rich to hear anything about large-heartedness?

How can you train yourself in large-heartedness?

CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA (150 - 215) "The Miscellanies" "And in the harvest the owners are prohibited from appropriating what falls from the handfuls; as also in reaping [the law] enjoins a part to be left unreaped; signally thereby training those who possess to sharing and to large-heartedness, by foregoing of their own to those who are in want, and thus providing means of subsistence for the poor."

Francis Edward Clark, Congregationalist minister, writes on a thriving church in Budapest. Evangelism, ministry to the blind, veterans, prisoners, sex workers, homeless refugees.

I’ve seen churches oppose aiding refugees— even protest or call the school board if others do so. Is this evangelism?

How can you work towards a church that is like this?

"They [Christians in Budapest] hold nine evangelistic meetings every week, and as many more for the Juniors. They visit the three great prisons of Budapest every week, to which they now have free access, they have a mission for blind soldiers as well as for blind children, have meetings for fallen women, and also for the thousands of people who live in box cars in the outskirts of the city, because there are no homes for them in the terribly congested metropolis which shelters hundreds of thousands of refugees."
