Once these cannons defended the Austrian region of Burgenland from threats from the east, now they silently welcome visitors to Forchtenstein Castle. It is a forbidding place, located high on a hill overlooking the wide plains to the east with views as far as Lake Neusiedl (the current border with Hungary). The castle is visible from far away. It is full of dark paintings of fearsome looking forebears of the Esterházy family that still owns the castle, along with many other treasures. May 2025.
