Gramps is happy that the all-you-can-eat salad bar is starting to turn green again. #tortoise #GopherTortoise

Violating a rule of thumb, finally drilled into me, to "look up", at tree tops and branches, while doing bird/nature photography.

On this outing, I was looking for more 'low-hanging fruit' (actually not at all easy to find!) Looking for scrub jays in the scrub, mostly. I did not succeed with the jays, but was surprised to see some other (ground) creatures I wasn't looking for.

I came across a deer, plus the 'Echo Moth'

I know that Gopher Tortoises are cantankerous beasties, but this one in particular seems to be reveling in my frustration that it dug a burrow right by my front door. Really, my guy? REALLY?

Taken from the top of a stoop, looking over at the yard on the right side. It is mostly dirt, with a gopher tortoise having decided that's a good place for a burrow.

For no reason, I would like to show you this teensy tiny itty bitty baby gopher tortoise that one of my dogs alerted me to this morning. It is AT MOST two inches long and is the cutest little baby I have ever seen in my life. I might have let out a squeak. And don't worry, baby is safe, baby is not in danger from the dog. I love me some Gopher Tortoises and try my best to do right by them. There are maybe a dozen, at least, on my property. #dogsofmastodon #tortoise #gophertortoise

Over 90% of gopher tortoise eggs are eaten by predators such as armadillos and raccoons before they even have a chance to hatch. We shouldn’t contribute to those numbers by disturbing tortoise eggs. Help protect your local tortoises by sharing!
