I think Haymitch definitely went and spoke to Caesar Flickerman before the interviews and either convinced him or hinted to him that he should ask Peeta if he had a girl back home specially to give Peeta the chance to play his card.

Hunger Games thoughts.

In the original trilogy, Haymitch calms Katniss after she shoots the arrow at the Game Makers by assuring her the Capitol won't hurt her family because to do so they'd "have to reveal" what happened during the training session. But from SotR, we know Snow has, at least in the past, not given two shits about how it looks to harm the families of tributes. Sure, he waited until after the Games, but I think he was waiting to see if Haymitch died in the Games; if Haymitch had died, then his family would still be alive (don't think too hard about that, Haymitch already has).

So was Haymitch lying to Katniss? Was this a newer trend? I don't think Snow had given up harming tribute families; Johanna says she's got no family left, and I think it's implied that this is Snow's fault.
