A large bonfire stacked with thin branches, twice as tall as the people gathered around it, burns ferociously as two lines of men walk around it in a large circle. Those closest to the camera are wearing white robes and carrying puja thalis. Holika Dahan symbolizes the burning of Holika, sister of asuran King Hiranyakashipu, during Satya Yuga. Hiranyakashipu thought of himself as a god and wanted everyone to worship him alone, putting to death any who refused. But after being influenced by the teachings of a sage while in the womb, his own son, Prahlada, became a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Outraged, Hiranyakashipu tried to kill Prahlada many times but each time Prahlada was protected by Vishnu's power. On one occasion Hiranyakashipu plotted to kill Prahlada by trapping him on a pyre, while under the protection of a boon his sister Holika had been granted by Brahma, and then exposing him to the flames. But the boon had been granted on the condition that Holika not use it to cause harm, and this condition combined with Vishnu's grace Prahlada was saved while Holika instead burned in the fire. Hiranyakashipu then tried to kill Prahlada himself once more, but Vishnu manifested as an incarnation of Narasimha and killed Hiranyakashipu instead. For this reason Holika Dahan celebrates the triumph of good over evil, and observing it is believed to banish fear and worry as well as offering relief from unfavourable planetary influences.
