Appreciate the Forward's writing on this story which has been factual and to the point. Unfortunately I think a lot of the Canadian media is 1) too demoralized and distracted at the moment and 2) too invested in the politician personalities and horserace issues that they can't write a sensible article from a detached perpective.

It should be noted that the Waffen SS was declared a criminal organization at Nuremberg. Also that Canadian government, as I understand it, showed little interest in investigating or prosecuting war crimes in the immediate postwar years. In the 6 days since, Canada’s political elite & media have been desperately trying to exculpate themselves & bury the entire affair as quickly as possible. Indeed, Govt. House Leader Karina Gould, who herself met privately with Hunka at the conclusion of the Sept. 22 special parliamentary session, tried to push thru a motion to have all evidence of the honouring of #Hunka expunged from the parliamentary transcript & audio-visual records.

I expect that the record will not look good. But as I said before, it's a very real question how #Hunka got into Canada. DId he lie? (in which case I suppose his citizenship might be open to revocation?) Or were Canadian officials happy to look the other way?
To revise the PM's apology, we'll likely see "a mistake that [will] deeply embarrass Parliament and Canada." All the more reason to release as much of it as possible.
not only was Canada a major #Ratlines destination for nazi collabos, but it had the *most* ignoble record of *all* the democracies in refusing entry to Jews fleeing nazi & fascist persecution. Tiny Uruguay admitted more Jewish refugees than Canada did.
There was literally a period when it was easier for nazis like #Hunka to get in to Canada than it was for Jewish refugees.
And this was by design, not by accident.
