The real mystery is why do you never see recipes calling for 1.189 cups of something. All recipes call for 1+, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 of everything. What are the odds every single bread recipe, cookie recipe, braised trake recipe, etc. has ingredients that work best together in whole numbers or simple fractions? Aliens? Yes, probably aliens.
