Jack Russell lived to be seventeen and a half. He loved sitting down by the creek, while I read.

A large school of Jacks in Palau πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Ό

#Palau had so many fish! The things I'd only seen in documentaries, I hope to make it back one day!

Yes... and no. It's complicated 😜

We've got something like half a dozen species of #hare in Canada. Some of them have common names based on "#jackrabbit", even though they're not #rabbits.

These ones are "white-tailed jackrabbits", formal name "Lepus townsendii". Where I live, they're the only common species of hare, so they're generally just called jackrabbits, or #jacks.

Further north than I am, there are Arctic hares. For whatever reason, those are generally not called jackrabbits. 🀷

Why does it have to be this complicated? I have no idea πŸ˜ƒ

More #Canadian #prairie #jackrabbits (again, actually a kind of #hare, not #rabbit...) from my wintry yard today.

These two handsome fellers (or gals, who knows?) are in the front yard, looking at me through my open front door. One's got a skinnier head than the other. Dunno if that tells me anything. They all keep some dark markings on their ears and nose when they turn white for the winter, but there's a lot of variety in terms of how much and where else they keep a bit of colour.

Again, these are probably Lepus townsendii, the White-tailed Jackrabbit. There are also Lepus americanus, the Snowshoe Hare, in the prairies, but I think they're mostly further north than me, up where the trees start in what we call the "parkland" area. I'm in the middle of the "grain belt", which is bald prairie for the most part.

I have a bunch more of these, plus some videos which need trimming. Captioning these takes some effort so it might take me a while to work through them.

A wild hare, of the species White-tailed Jackrabbit (which aren't rabbits), also just called "jackrabbits" or "jacks" in the prairies. This one sits in the middle of a snowy yard, the rest of which is out of focus. There are a few rabbit turds - little black dots - scattered here and there, standing out against the snow.

He or she is mostly white in their winter coat, with black eartips and brown markings on the nose and around the face. He is sitting with haunches on the ground, front feet together with head erect - sitting up - and with ears erect but not in "threat is near" swivel mode. He is looking at the photographer, who is only about 5 meters away.Photograph of a White-tailed Jackrabbit, which is actually a kind of hare, in the snow-covered front yard of a house in Saskatchewan, in the middle of the Canadian prairies. The scene is mostly white snow, with only the subject in focus.

He is seen in profile, with head turned towards the camera. The ears are erect and fully "deployed", facing 180 degrees apart, listening for possible threats. He appears to be looking directly into the camera.
