As we go up the river, we’re presented with China old & new - ruins of flooded towns, pagodas on top of the mountains, natural beauty of the waterways contrasting w/ ultra modern bridges & gigantic steel walls of Three Gorges Dam. Yang's approach can be seen as too arty farty, as it tackles grand themes - the country's identity & its history in a poetic, spiritual way. And it many ways it is. But who cares.
