When taking breaks from work, I dive into a hobby fascination: rediscovered lost films. I peruse the Wikipedia entry on rediscovered films, track one down, and watch it.
I'm a Historian, so I have a ton of respect for those who work tirelessly not only to find the lost films of history, but restore them.
Here's today's film: the Arbuckle/Keaton farce, "The Chef". (btw, spot the ginormous coffee maker!) Not to mention the awesome choreography!
A 1914 Japanese-American film was thought to be lost to time until a professor figured out the decaying reels were in a vault.
Professor Denise Khor of Northeastern University discovered a rare piece of movie history while she was doing research for a book about film culture. The reels she found in 2016 were believed to be the only known copy of “The Oath of the Sword.” It is among the earliest Asian-American films, historians said.

The price is clearly not that of admission, since we’ve got Dorothy Burgess and those legs on every publicity photo for this one. She’s a “woman with a tainted past” who moves to the tropics, marries a not-so-nice pearl trader, then falls for another man. Austrian Joseph Schildkraut plays an Argentinian café violinist who is pimped out by Myrna Loy to rich women- and ends up saving a suicidal woman by proposing marriage to her.
