Mastondon is about 1% the size of Twitter across all instances. It simply will not scale to that size in my opinion as a paid for service even if thousands of instances are added.

Popular #Mastodon users will rack up server costs. And the biggest servers will be incentivised to get bigger - they have economies of scale - or die.

In my opinion, they will probably be incentivised to adopt advertising.
