Manchester Council and Salford University have put an information board about the demolished Mather Platt Park Works, Newton Heath by the Rochdale Canal. It was a major employer in the area and was memorably painted by Lowry. It seems to me that many people lazily label places like Newton Heath as "shitholes" without giving any thought as to why they might have become so; loss of a major local employer is going to be a huge factor if not the only one.
