Ephat Mujuru & the Spirit of the People

In 1972, Ephat Mujuru formed his first group, naming it for one of the most beloved Shona ancestors, Chaminuka. In the midst of the liberation struggle, mbira music became political. Singer and bandleader Thomas Mapfumo began interpreting mbira songs with an electric dance band, creating chimurenga (loosely âstruggleâ) music, named for the independence fighters. [...]
Unonzani?
Unonzani is a track by the mbira songbird, gwenyambira Tanaka Chikati who goes by the stage name SunniChi. Unonzani the title of the track is a Shona word that asks the question: What is your name?
The song is a reflective soundscape that reminds us to remember who we are and where we come from, especially in the prevailing socio-economic climate were one ends up travelling far from home for a destiny unknownâŠ.

The #Mbira Dzavadzimu (mbira of the ancestors) is a large lamellophone from #Zimbabwe, likely going back around 1300 years. It produces a complex harmonic and polyphonic #music; originally 2 mbiras plus hosho (gourd rattle) would play a continuous yet shifting cycle during the bira ceremony.
This is Erica Azim playing a #Shona #song called Shumba. Also note the yodelling, which is a typical part of the vocal style.

âTaa! Our Language May Be Dying, But Our Voices Remainâ is an album of field recordings from Botswana.
Taa (âhuman beingâ) is a rich language as it possesses 112 sounds, the most of any language in the world, but is on the verge of extinction. This captivating music, shamanic ghostly ballads from the farthest reaches of Southern Africa, is created by solo and layered voices, handclaps, found percussion and thumb piano.
