#metropcs

pssst! UC San Diego, there's nothing new or innovative about this: small cells and cellular densification has been around since at least #3g days. I know bcs I was one of the many RF #engineers in the days of #metropcs (before T-Mobile) and others who designed many small cells and DAS to 'offload' heavy traffic from the bigger towers and, thus, conserve phone battery and improve reception among other benefits. I guess, when you run out of options for the #5g case, well...

I got a good tech support person on #MetroPCS who sent me to an automated customer satisfaction survey system that is completely broken. I feel bad that there was just no way to give positive feedback.

@cherold @arstechnica ...and you'd be correct. Once a mighty and powerful little wireless service provider - and first in the US to provide true #4GLTE - #metropcs was gobled up by the #magenta bros for one purpose: to have a successful LTE network already up and running, along with all its spectrum assets and clients. Once they did, they began to shut the original network off, transport all the clients to their own 'side' and get rid of almost everything else except the name for mkt purposes...

When #4GLTE was introduced well over a decade ago by #metropcs in the US, the theoretical max download speed was ~300Mbps (initial max chan BW of 20MHz, 2k RB per frame, no overhead). 5 years have passed since the introduction of #5G and we're still not there yet - with countless newer bands allocated - as we 'celebrate' US median 5G download speeds of ~221Mbps: fiercewireless.com/wireless/t-

@Techmeme ..."seemingly 5G-capable...you'll see that there is no #5G indicator on the screen"... - from #TMobileUS calling #3G #hspa+ technology '4G' over a decade ago (and, consequently, acquiring the US 1st commercially available 'real' #4GLTE carrier #metropcs) to #att 's use of a '#5GE' icon when it was really 4G service since about three years ago, the US #telco knows a thing or two about 'seemingly capable indicators'...

I can confirm this as it happened to my sister when she was supposed to get a *new* replacement and ended up with a used/refurb. #tmobile #metrobytmobile #metropcs
