I did once start a small 3ft x 1ft N-gauge #modelrailway layout about 15 years ago (I posted about it here, sadly some of the pics have disappeared: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/topic/21855-small-n-gauge-layout-chinthurst/), it’s still in the garage loft since we moved 10 years ago though and is very incomplete. I think I might have been a bit ambitious, so maybe need to start something simple.

A little project I've been working on this weekend - An N scale analog train controller using an esp32, which allows for the train to be controlled from any browser.

In my case, the location I have in mind for this layout doesn't have room for a physical controller, and this opens up the possibility of automating the scene in the future.

A red tram the size of an adult human finger runs around an oval of streetcar track on a wooden table, surrounding a single miniature pine tree speckled with fake snow.

A prototyping board holds several interconnected modules. A microSD card slot is attached to an ESP32-C3 super mini, which is wired to a Texas Instruments DRV8871 motor driver, used to electrify the track.

The remaining module is an adjustable voltage regulator to supply 5V to the esp32, from the 12V supplied to the track via the motor driver.

A simple web page in a mobile browser, titled "Grand Central". Below that is a circular slider labelled "Throttle", made to look like a train driver's power control lever. This controls both the speed and direction of the train.

To the right of the slider is a 'stop' button that returns the slider to zero.

The web page is loaded from the microSD card attached to the esp32, and JavaScript on the page calls back to the esp32 when the slider's position is changed.

If the page is reloaded, there is some JavaScript that gets the currently set value from the controller, and then sets the position of the slider. This value is also saved in the non-volatile memory of the esp32, so it persists through reboots.

I did also buy another narrow gauge wagon yesterday. It’s one that can only be bought from the model shop in this region (although it’s Leighton Buzzard so not exactly close!). It’s a wonderful shade of green. #ModelRailway
